Re: Plug Issue

Compression and spark tests, does the engine run properly at idle?
It might also help if we knew what engine we are talking about, can you post a model number?

Re: Plug Issue

9.5 johnson sea horse 9r69 or 9RL69 1969
i recently cleaned the float in the carb and replaced the plugs. idles great (well when i turn the throttle to "shift" it idles fine) and starts right up but it seems to be running at half speed. i pulled the plugs out and one was oily and dark int he center. the bottum plug was white and virtually dry. Sometimes when i turn the throttle to "fast" it almost stalls and then slowly increases rpms. other times its a little smoother

Re: Plug Issue

It actually was NOT firing on both. I just fixed it. The one plug wasnt even working because i guess upon install i tightened it to much and closed the gap in the plug. i was only using one cylinder. I installed the original plug (which was fine in the first place)in place of gapless plug and the thing is running like a beast now!!

You using the correct plugs? J4C You should not be able to close the gap through overtightening!

Re: Plug Issue

If thats the case im not sure at all why the no gap thing would have happened. i got J6C, it was suggested and was what came with the boat at the time of purchase. That cylinder must not have been firing at all since i replaced the plug...there was absolutley no gap. that wold explain the amount of oil and carbon on the one plug and the relatively unused/white color of the problem plug.
