Plug wires

How do I change the plug wires on a 1972 Johnson 25 hp? How far do I tear down the motor? to get the wires off?

You must remove the flywheel, then the armature plate. You only need to remove the four phillips head screws near the centre and the throttle linkage to detach the armature plate. Then flip it, remove whatever tabs are holding the wires in place, pull the wires out of the ignition coils and install new ones.<br /><br />But you really don't need to be replacing them unless they're cracked or broken. They're not a maintenance item like in a car. You'll have to replace them with metal core wire of the same diameter.<br /><br />You know to torque the flywheel to spec when installing and to use a proper puller for removing, right?

Yes, I've had the flywheel off a couple of times, but never went lower than the points and condensor. My engine overheated once and melted the wires, I taped them up, but I think they are shorting again.

You're welcome. I just had to make sure, you should be set to go. Some coils you really have to twist the wires into, almost like threading them in. It's helpful to coat the end of the wires with some silicone grease when you're trying to wind them in. That's the stuff used to lube the spark plug boots, which you normally get in tiny packets.<br /><br />7mm wire fits the coils.
