Point of Shift assist assembly?

Just wondering what the point of the shift assist cylinder is next to the shift cables. Its a loaded shock that seems to work against whatever gear you're trying to put it in. The cylinder is always pushing towards neutral. Do you really need this? My shift cable is a little stiff, I'm wondering if I pull this cylinder off if it'll shift easier.

It is put on there to ensure neutral and make cable adjustments easy.

Thanks.. I'm gonna toy with my cables a bit today. I actually connected a rubber hose to the end of my lower cable and filled the hose with wd40. I mounted it so gravity would slowly leak the wd40 down from the hose into the cable. I'm gonna see if that helps make it like butter again. Since it is getting a little stiff, not bad enough to replace yet IMO
