Does anyone know the easiest way to determine why I am not getting any spark. Is there a way to determine if it is points or coil promblems without disassembling things? If I do need at them what is the best way to access?

On a related topic I have to use sleeves on my plugs, does anyone know what a new head would cost and what the best source would be?

Can anyone also recommend a reputable mechanic or a Johnson guru in the Ottawa Ontario Canada area?

Thanks in advance.

If it's not because the ignition is killed then it's under the flywheel I'm afraid. First try isolating (disconnecting) the two wires that drop down from the armature plate (where the spark plug wires come from). They're shorted together to shut the engine down, but if they get grounded, you'll lose spark too. Each lead is for each cylinder.
Failing that, you've gotta pull the flywheel, since all the ignition components are under it. The only acceptable puller for the flywheel is one that pulls on the three bolt holes near the center of the flywheel. A 'harmonic balancer puller' from an auto tools place works well.

By spark plug sleeves, do you mean things that thread onto the spark plug and then thread into a larger hole in the head?? If so, you're talking about heli-coils that have wound out. Put a little loc-tite red on them and thread them back in! They're not supposed to come out!
I'd expect you'd probably have a hard time finding a head that didn't have stripped and repaired spark plug holes. Those seemed to strip all the time, and heli-coils are the common fix for them.

Good luck!

Oh, and everything under the flywheel is pretty cheap and available, so don't worry too much if you find your problems are there. Cracked and moisture laden ignition coils are probably your best bet for problems under there.

is that key hard to put back in?

since I cant seem to get at either of the TWO pullers I have, I am going to get a new one this weekend and take the donor engine apart as a test run (there is fifty dollars well spent, just to have a practice engine, lol) Once I do something i learn it fairly well, and will feel MUCH better attacking the other two engines, well, three engines, well four ... oh yeah, and the other one ... lol

six engines!!! and the troller .. I think Im a little addicted, lol

The flywheel key?? Nope, not hard to replace at all. I'm yet to see one that is so loose that it just 'falls out'. If you shear a key, you'll have to dress down the crank shaft taper of any burrs and clean the shaft. No oil of any kind goes on the shaft when replacing the flywheel, it's a dry fit.
