points eliminator

i have a 79 gulfstream with a chevy 305 and mallory distributor i recently put a new mallory points eliminator kit and now all it does is backfire when i try to start it. seems like timing maybe but its beyond my mechanical knowledge if anyone has suggestions please share.

Double check your installation. Make sure you followed all the directions correctly and fully. If still no luck, you are going to have to get someone to set the timing.
The timing should be reset after the kit is installed anyway. Even if it runs it could still be out of tune.

Was the distributor removed during the installation? Were the wires removed off the cap?

If yes to either or both of these questions, sounds like the firing order is now off for the engine, or the timing is really off.
Won't be too hard to set it back to right if that's the case. When you're all done, you may even have dreams about 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 (GM firing order) in your sleep. ;)

any electronic conversion (Pertronix etc.) kit will instruct you to check and adjust timing after installation. You need a timing light.

right on thanks. I figured thats what i needed but its always nice to get some other opinons .
