Hi guys just bought an old 33hp johnson 1968 cost 25$.Problem though no spark both cyl took the flywheel off and the coils are both cracked going to get new ones. What I was wondering was that the wick that rubbes on the cam looks really dry and I think the points are still ok so iI dont have to buy a set so what type of oil or grease should I use on it and how much and should I put some on the cam on the crank as well thx

Re: Points

My Johnson Service Manual simply says "Two or three drops of oil should be applied to the felt pad each season --do not over oil."

Re: Points

(Point Setting Of Magneto Models)
(J. Reeves)

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubber portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not.

(Magneto Coil Alignment)
(J. Reeves)

To align the coils properly, have the metal vertical portion of the coil yokes aligned with the inside edge of the bevel that exists on the top portion of the aluminum seat upon which the coils sit. This creates the proper distance between the coils and the flywheel magnets. Faulty alignment creats friction and the yokes of the coils heat up, turn blue and expand.

Re: Points

Dave.... If you're referring to the oil/fuel mixture....NO!

Use a good 50/1 TCW-III oil (1pt ot 6gal gas).... a 50/1 mixture.

Re: Points

I think he means for the oiler wick. I just use 3 in 1 or other light machine oil. I think engine oil would be too thick and would gum things up.

Re: Points

Do yourself a favor and buy new points along with the coils. I found out the hard way stranded on the lake in the pouring rain!

Re: Points

Did you ask about putting oil on the crank? Do NOT put oil on the crank or flywheel tapers!! They must be clean and dry and the flywheel nut must be tightened to 100-105 ft/lbs using a torque wrench. If you ignore this advice, you will soon find out why. $$$$$
