Hey , Let me start off by saying that I really enjoy reading all of these posts. I really don't know how things got fixed before the internet.
Now onto my questions. I bought a Polar 19x8 skiff a few yrs back. Got it for a real good deal and got what I paid for of course. I have had carb probs and other fuel issues with my 90hp yammy but have it running great now. But I also knew that there were problems with the deck. I put off the work until this year and a few weeks ago I tore into it. I figured on just replacing the deck and being good. But after getting it up found that the stringers were rotten and foam was saturated. This boat being a 99' I figure he left it sit outside full of water most of its life. I've decided to redo it all. I have read lots of posts and watched lots of youtube videos and gotten good and bad insight. I think that I have a pretty good plan on doing the job just have sooo many dif opinions on products and no clear answers on material(resin or epoxy, type of glass, gelcoat ). I am on a strict budget but want it done right. I expect the boat to last for years after this rebuild. From all that I have read I need to order from UScomposites. I live North of Atlanta and dont know of any suppliers around here so I have to order all of my material. Does anyone have a rough estimate of amount of glass, resin , foam, gelcoat and which are easiest and best to work with?
I want to try and get it all here at once so I can work instead of waiting for multiple orders to get here and paying more shipping. Any thoughts ,advice, suggestions or just plain help will be greatly appreciated.

If you're on a budget polyester resin will be fine, that's the stuff your boat is made out of anyway.

It's hard to say exactly how much resin and cloth/mat you're going to need due to the width of your boat and number of stringers.

I can figure your foam pretty close for you if you want to give me the dimensions of your bilge.

Re: Polar 1996 Rebuild

I think that i have the foam figured. That was pretty easy to figure. I have read some people saying 5 gallons of resin others say up to 15. That just seems like a huge variance. Also , what is the huge difference between resin from uscomposites and 3m resin that is readily available? I know that in bulk their resin is cheaper but if I was to run out from my order and was maybe a gallon short could I finish with 3m? It is just confusing to me not having done much glass work in the past. Is it worth buying a gelcoat gun to shoot it or will rolling it work just as good if time and care are taken?

Re: Polar 1996 Rebuild

I spent alot of time figuring my material list, hours that i wish i could get back. I finally came up with about 9Gals just to wet out all the CSM and 1708 I'll be using. My initial purchase is going to be 10 gals and figuring on needing to get another 3-5 gals down the road. Luckily i found a semi local(90min drive) guy to supply my resin. My boat is only a 14'er and 63" at it's widest. And I'll be ordering 20yds of CSM and 15yds 1708 (both 50")

I plan on reshooting all my gelocat as well. I having been reading advice given by Yacht Dr. as far as how to apply. He has a method for spraying gelcoat using a 2Qt pressure pot from HF.

some good reading here, as well as other threads

Re: Polar 1996 Rebuild

You really need to post pics. If your boat is the style I think it is, I would be very interested in seeing how you removed the deck to gain access to the stringers and foam.

Re: Polar 1996 Rebuild

5 gal won't even be a good start on that boat.

The thing about trying to order it all at once is if you have too much you can't send it back... and you'll have to find another boat to restore so the materials won't go to waste.

Re: Polar 1996 Rebuild

Has this boat been torn down before? That last pix:
attachment.php

Makes me think it's been torn into previously...

It also appears that Polar was(is) similar to Carolina skiffs & may have been originally a foam filled core, w/out typical stringers & bulkheads... But there is very little info & fewer pix of the construction of a Polar, so I could be wrong...

Re: Polar 1996 Rebuild

Dont know if it had been worked on before. That grinding is some that I started just to see how hard it was to get old off. Dont know about foam core either. The way that the stringers were built makes me think no. The stringers looked like they were built good to start with just had been saturated withwater. It also looked like other Polars like I've seen. But there was no glass wrapped over the stringers except for just a few spots like it was only to hold the deck down. There are also several pieces of mat tha is lapped over and dry like it didn't stick to stringer and just fell over and dried. Ithink the main proble with the water saturation was the drain holes going down the center of the hull were only maybe 1/2 in high slits and were all gummed up with dirt .
From what I've read it seems that I will use much more csm than 1708. I am thinking 15gals will be a good start for resin , 15 yds 1708 for stringers and 30 yds csm? I know that I will need some cabosil and utensils. Am I on the right track here guys?
Thnaks for the help

Re: Polar 1996 Rebuild

Have yet another question from a beginner. Once my new deck is laid I will have 3 layers of csm and 3" of 1708 tabbing on the side of the hull approx 6" high. How to I blend this into the existing? Oherwise I will have quite a lip around the whole boat.

Re: Polar 1996 Rebuild

The layers should be staggered as you move up the hull sides, so it shouldn't be a big 'lip'.

The WOG graphic shows the layers staggered..........

Re: Polar 1996 Rebuild

Thanks jbcurt00. I didn't think about that until I looked back. Just want it to look like I know what I'm doing.LOL. Also, I've been grinding and sanding and sanding and grinding and so on. Don't mean to sound lazy or like I want to cut corners. But, do I need to grind all of the existing glass down to the hull? I'm speaking of the exisiting tabs and fillets. I am grinding to good clean glass with no air bubbles. It jsut seems like as long as I have good glass to bond to I am just grinding for no reason. Thanks again for all the help from this forum. I wouldn't even attempt this project without you guys.

How did you setup the bunks on the trailer? Its hard to tell from the photos the best spot for them. I have a 97 Polar 1796 that is waterlogged. I thought the 2 4-1/2in W flat spots down the center tunnel would be a good support, however it doesn't appear to have stringers there from the photos. I wonder if mine also has foam in it holding the extra water, I was confused why they would have deck drains under the casting deck filling the interior compartment that doesn't drain to the bilge area.
