Pond that doesn't hold water...

I have a friend that bought a house with a pond that doesn't hold water. In the spring it will fill up but right now there is just a couple feet of mud in the bottom. I was checking out pond liners online, I think the pond is a little too big for that...not sure. Anyway, anyone have any ideas?

A bud of mine had a pond like that. He used kitty litter in the area that was leaking. It took a lot to do it, but it did the trick. Of course he used the cheap clay kind.

He had run an ad in the paper wanting peoples used cat litter. He screened all the poop out and then put it in his pond. He had more trouble with getting people to stop calling about picking it up after he had enough though.

Most cat litter is made from Bentonite. Clay is cheaper and more readily availible.

You have to REALLY REALLY REALLY want a pond badly to process used kitty litter for it.

Reminds me of the baby ruth floating in the pool in Caddyshack...

So...how big is this pond, anyhow. It's hard to make a suggestion without that info. If rain has been scarce up there and the pond is small, it could just be evaporation. You'd be amazed at how much water evaporates from a small pond.

I used to have several large ponds where I raised goldfish. It was a constant deal of keeping them full. I finally put in a float-valve system so I wouldn't have to monitor them all the time.

How are his neighbor's ponds? If they do not use liners and are full (or nearly full since this is a low rainfall summer), you could rule out the need for liners or clay additives, since the soil sould be similar.

Since the pond is nearly dry, it's a perfect time to investigate where the water may have gone. Check for holes that may lead to unknown field tiles or if the overflow pipe leaks. If the pond ever had muskrats, their burrowing can cause leaks.

Also, where does the source water come from? A regular source from field tile, creek or output from a geothermal heat pump, will keep the level up year round.

If there is no continous source, winter snow and spring rains will fill it, and the summer sun will evaporate it. Summer rain usually does not help, unless there is huge amount, as it is absorbed into the ground and does not run off.

Our 1/4 acre pond has dropped about 1 ft. since spring, but we don't have a regular source of water. We are considering routing a roof drainage into the pond to help, but we have not had much rain this summer in Indiana.

If your friend has well water, he could always break out the garden hose.

Good luck.

The pond is roughly swimming pool size....maybe 15 feet deep. There was a test hole dug nearby which holds water so it baffles me why the pond won't. The next door neighbor has a pond but I haven't had a chance to look at it. I'm going to get some info from the DEC so I can get a better handle on the soil composition in the area.

Swimming pool size? A vinyl liner could do that, but bentonite clay is a much more reasonable solution.

Clay type kittylitter is mostly bentonite with deodorants and sometimes perfumes added. I don't think I would want that in my pond.

Google pond sealing. Get a cuppajoe first if you plan to read all of it. :)

Google up Yunker Plastics, Elkhorn, WI. They can do backyard fish ponds to small lakes. To install a liner, the muck would have to be removed and get to undisturbed earth; that would take some excavating. The bentonite might be an easier way to go.

Get a hold of the county soil and water conservation district. They should be able to help you with the pond problem. They may have even designed the pond. They can also tell you the soils you have to determine what may need to be done to hold water.

Be careful in contacting the DEC or other government agencies for help.
If it was manmade and the proper permits were not obtained for it (if required), they could require the pond to be eliminated.
