Re: poor mans cruiser

I have a 260hp V8 and only with a very light load with 2 people on board my 2750 Bayliner might plane out. With a full load, forget about it. I have talked to several others that have owned the same model of boat I have and it apparently is a problem of being underpowered.

Looks like a great boat, but I would think it is way underpowered with that 120 horse engine. With mine being underpowered doesn't bother me as I boat in a small lake where there is no need to be in a hurry to get anywhere.

Roscoe thats exactly what i was thinking, camp on land near the lake with the boat tied up or anchored.

There is a lake upstate ny called swinging bridge. People do that all the time there.

Or buy a cheap motor home those are all over the place a nice 27 -31 footer and pull the boat with it.

Second option is better has all the things you want right in it wherever you stop you have a home.

Too bad about the bike though, i had to sell the trans am when i had the second kid.
this is what i was thinking... but to each, their own. I bought my first boat last year and was all about getting a cuddy cabin until I shopped around (in person, not on internet). The cabin takes up SOOO much usable space for little in return. When I thought about jsut how much I would spend time in the cabin versus how much time i would spend sunning/napping in the open bow, the choice was clear.

Oh and when I still have to work, I'm able to :)

And I like how you still have that porta pottie (the women don't really like hanging it off the side when the water is too cold to go in).

Anyway - I don't want to hijack the thread, but what is the difference between a planing hull and a non-planing (Discplacement??) hull?

How does one tell which is which?

wow I didn't know bayliner made displacement hulls even thier 4788 is a planing hull. (biggest boat they make)

I guess the correct term would be semi-displacement. Regardless back when that boat was built they were designed to be "slow" inexpensive cruisers. Given enough power it would get over the hump and be "on" plane.

Bayliner once made a sailboat also....Bucaneer was the name they gave them I believe.
