HI there!
I have a 86 70hp johnson seahorse outboard and was wondering if I should be worried if I accidently started the motor in my garage? It was running for maybe 15 to 30 seconds if that. I was able to put my hand on the block and flywheel and it wasnt any warmer than anyother piece of metal on the boat. Thank you to another hot day in Arizona! I pulled it out and put a flush kit on and restarted it with water on it and it made a pop noise right as it started, almost like it was backfiring, but it ran fine. Im thinking it was just clearing the gas out of the cylinders that was left over from being choacked and shut off so quickly.

probably, but watch the pee stream, that was long enough to damage the vanes. they rotate at the speed of the engine, and no water the friction gets them hot, and they melt. i just change one that had melted and clogged the water inlet into the pump.

I would not worry about the pop sound but I would be concerned about the water pump.
It could be fine but mine melted in less than a minute when I forgot to turn on the water.

Only thing would be the impeller dragging in the water pump but that would take time to get hot and wear.

The powerhead should be good for several minutes with the exhaust manifold getting the hottest.

I am ashamed to say it but when I was a teen I had a 10 hp Scott Atwater and I can't tell you how many times I ran that engine out of the water.

Go to any busy launch on a Sunday afternoon and you will see half dozen or so boats that crank the engine before they launch to insure that it's ready to go.

It's not like cranking your auto/truck engine, after an oil change, and forgetting to put the fresh oil in. Grin

I'd go ahead & change the impeller now, if it were mine - better than having little pieces of it blocking the water passages....................
