I am totally new to boating. In fact, I haven't taken mine out yet. The previous owner described a problem to me....he says that when driving the boat, it sometimes feels like you've hit something and then it's fine again. He believes the problem to be in the lower unit and that it is popping out of forward. Any suggestions? Where do I start?

Thanks!
Michelle

Re: Popping out of forward

Trying to remember exactly. I acquired a '65 120 hp (well worn) Mercruiser (and well worn boat) that did a similar thing as I recall. I tried to adjust the linkage and that didn't solve the problem.

Finally I took the lower unit apart and the shifting clutch "dog" and the rear of the forward gear (the actual gear in the lower unit) had the ears worn off (where they mate with each other) which allowed it to occur. Replacing the two gears solved the problem.

Mark
