Re: Possible new Tow Rig
Let me toss in my .02 as I own a 1999 F250 with a V10. My truck has 101,000 miles on it, and I have owned it since about 65,000 miles.
I have had two blown spark plugs. They sell kits to fix this issue, and from my experience, it might cost a bit up front, but would be worth it. I couldn't imagine having one go on me while towing something 100 miles from home. Both times was local and it was back up and running shortly, although my wallet was lighter.
These motors have issues with exhaust manifold bolts as well. I have a couple gone on mine and it makes some racket when cold. It quiets up as it warms, but is always there. Other than these two items, the rest of the stuff would just be keeping up with maintenance, unless your buying a lemon.
I also looked into gas vs diesel, and for me, the gas motor savings up front was a big factor. I got my truck for nearly half what the diesel trucks were selling for. I was not Daily driving it then, but do now. It hurts in the fuel mileage department. 12 mpg if I'm lucky, 10.5 or so average.
As far as towing/hauling, I really like the truck. The motor does work harder at higher RPM than a diesel, but I don't think the motor would ever limit the towing capacity. I towed 10K lbs or so the other day, up a very steep hill (wish I knew what it truly was) and the truck stuck itself at 2800 RPM and stayed at 45 mph the whole way. Sure everyone behind me wanted to do 60, but it was a 45 mph road, and speeding with a trailer to me seems dangerous.
The price seems reasonable, the items that need to be replaced sound more maintenance than the vehicle being neglected (really, how does on neglect the coil packs, and we all know shocks are wear items, as are plugs).
If the truck fits your wants, needs and budget, I think around $2000 you should be able to fix the items needed, and be into it for what you want.
