A friend invited myself and my wife out sailing today for what would be our first time in a sailboat. Afternoon started out great with a fairly strong NE wind and 2-3ft waves. We were having fun tacking back and forth up the lake pretty much by ourselves enjoying the sun and stiff breeze.

About three hours into the trip we heard a faint horn blasting from we thought, a distant boat, about 1/2km away and 2km offshore. We decided we should investigate and headed towards the boat. As we approached we could see the lone occupant frantically waving and yelling. By the time we had lowered sails (not easy for a couple newbies in strong winds) and pulled along side the boat in distress, it was fully submerged with only the tip of the bow sticking vertically out of the water and the boater was in the water along with all of his belongings. Fortunately he was wearing a PFD but was visibly panicked and frightened.

We got him aboard and called the coastguard and local police dept. We stayed with the submerged boat until the police boat arrived about 45 minutes later. Managed to retrieve most of his belongings from the water in the meantime.

If we hadn't been within earshot of his horn, he would have been in the water for who knows how long because there were very few boats on the water and he would have been nearly invisible to any passing boats because of the rough water conditions.

We went away from our first sailing expedition feeling pretty good about our rescue.

Excellent, "Moody". I'm assuming in Canada, the water is fairly cold even now. I'm guessing hypothermia would have set in pretty quickly without you guys coming to the rescue.

Good Job! Thanks for being there and being willing to go out of your well to help another human being. Boaters, for the most part, make the most awesome people!

Re: Possibly saved a life today

Friend has photos on his phone and I'm waiting for copies. After talking with the boater, he just said he noticed water in the boat and attempted to bail it out but it sank to a level where the waves (2-3ft) started coming in over the transom. Said he was unable to start the main engine and his kicker motor hasn't run all summer. Don't think it was in very good condition because all sorts of boat bits, included two full sets of sleeper lounge seats ended up floating nearby.

From the time we first spotted him, to the point he was in the water was only about 8-10 minutes. Happened pretty quick. Water temps are about 20*C or 68*F so hypothermia really isn't a big concern just yet.

Don't sell yourself short, Moody Blue, because one thing I do recall is that in 50 degree (Farenheit) water, Hypothermia can lead to death in as little as one hour.

Good on you for being there and providing a life line. This thread could not only serves as a testament to your being there, but also as a reminder to those that put off needed attention areas in resto's and the like. Assuming anything other than a forgotten drain plug, and even that needs to be reminded to us frequently. Kudos!

Re: Possibly saved a life today

Yeah, hypothermia is a big worry.

I never posted this before, but about 5 years ago in mid October I went out on a nearby lake (Lake MacBride in Iowa) for some fishing. It was pretty nice day, air temp mid 60s, water mid 50s, ~ 15-18 mph SW wind. This is about a 900 acre no-wake lake with two kind of skinny branches. I launched on the south branch and was the only power boater out there. I saw a small sail boat, about 12-14 feet in the middle of the lake.

As I was motoring to my fishing spot I noticed somebody on the sailboat waving and then noticed there was somebody in the water so I swung over to him and shut down the motor. I had him work his way to the back and come in over the transom since it was lower. I got him back close to the sail boat and he said he'd just jump in and swim over so my boat (Lund) wouldn't get scratched. Tried to tell him it was aluminum and already covered with scratches but he insisted. So I dropped him off and headed off to fish.

About 45 min to an hour later I heard a loud whistle and saw the lady in the sail boat waving frantically about 250 yards away. I waved back, reeled in and dropped the hammer. Figured no wake was out the window at this point. Got close and saw the guy so I swung around down wind and idled up to him. He got hold of the side of the boat and I said, "So, you fell in again, eh?

he said, " I never actually got back in the boat."

I said, " Holy crap, you been in the water all this time? Can you get in the boat?"

He said, "I'm not sure."

I told him to get to the back and when he got his foot on the A plate I grabbed his life vest and dragged him in, fortunately he wasn't very big. He was a little goofed out so I had to make him put on my Carhartt sweat shirt while we chased down the girlfriend in the sailboat. This time we risked scratches to make sure he was in the boat. I offered to tow them back to the dock but he really wanted to sail it back.

Considering how bad the fishing was, that was the only thing interesting that happened that day.

Hey, I think what you did was great, but I really doubt hypothermia was a big issue. Even surface water temps in Lake Superior right now are 70 deg F.

That's not to say they weren't very happy to be waiting in your sailboat for the Police boat to arrive, of course.

Good job!
