Thank you everyone. Most of us don't have access to a dyno. So performance number are key to knowing how well our outboards are running. Of course there are so many factors that effect performance but so far it's very interesting what you guys have posted. Thx and hope we get more.

iBoats says your boat weighs about 2200lbs. Very nice looking boat. Deep vee. Looks like you could take that boat offshore even on a bad day. Nice

Thanks.....going with a rebuilt unit should be pretty straightforward. Probably could have rebuilt it myself but instead got one from somebody who knows what they are doing. Might try to rebuild my old PH later as a learning experience, or just scavenge parts off it if needed.

Mostly a PH rebuild needs to be affordable. Most of the people on this forum are budget minded. Rebuilt Evinrudes, Johnsons ad Merc run $5000-$6000 with a warranty. So I try to stay well under that otherwise I would upgrade to a newer motor.

If your gonna rebuild??
Figure out why it went bad first??
I hear you Jerry....It didn't get hot (have temp gauge and overheat buzzer) so I believe that bottom cylinder was running lean. Before it went south I had done the starter fluid test and found that the bottom port cover was leaking air, probably been like that for some time....and that could cause a lean condition? Also I haven't done anything to the carbs for a looooong time....was told if it is running good, leave it alone. So it's possible that bottom carb was running lean too. The carbs are off for the PH swap but I have not done anything with them yet. Will check and see how many turns out that bottom low speed screw was at, along with the other 2. Got 3 carb kits also so they will be getting a thorough cleaning. Am thinking that replacing the PH and rebuilding the carbs should fix any possible lean condition that was there.....am I missing anything? Not sure what else I could do to figure out WHY it went bad . The original PH was "repaired" or "rebuilt", not sure which...back in 1995 when it got hot due to impeller failure. I can't find any records on what was done to it back then, as my dad (passed away in 1997) took it to a local Chrysler guru (since retired) who did the "work". So the history on my original PH is kind of in doubt as to what was done to it. Ran great for many years though. Any other suggestion or advice would be great.

No problem for me topgun. your discussion is VERY interesting since all of us might have to do what you are doing some day. Also if we can avoid it by listening to your experience that's also very cool. Normally anyone that is going to post to this kind of discussion has already done so and not much will happen after this point. Probably biggest thing we want to know is how much does it cost to get a PH rebuilt?

"Probably biggest thing we want to know is how much does it cost to get a PH rebuilt?" It really depends on what you want to do.....If I did my own work and just repaired the bottom cylinder only, looking at around $400-$600 for piston/boring/bearings, etc. This is based on my research online. You could buy a rebuild "kit" that has all new pistons/bearings/gaskets for around $600-$700, then pay a machine shop for boring...probably several hundred $$...so looking at close to a grand, if you do all the work yourself (this is for a 3 cylinder). You could take a chance on a used PH from ebay or FB marketplace....that state "Great compression" or "Freshwater only".....a crap shoot at best for $500-$1000. So I decided to look for rebuilt PHs ready to install....found several shops online that had them for Chrysler engines. They wanted around $1900 plus $350 core. Checked reviews for several and they were sketchy at best...lots of complaints about rejecting your core and keeping the money to not honoring their warranty. So with rejected core it was over $2200(free shipping though lol) Decided to call the Chrysler/Force guru himself, Franz Buddenburg, to see what he had. He had several PHs he had rebuilt himself for sale, so I bought one for $1500 plus $168 for shipping. All cylinders bored .020 over with new Wiseco pistons, all covers, cylinder head, ready to install....just have to transfer a few parts off old PH. Have dealt with him many times in the past so his reputation is solid with me. ALSO looked at used outboards...Merc, Yamaha, Evinrude....in the 90HP range....anything that ran was $2500-up....for a 15-20 year old engine....another crap shoot. So for the money, the rebuilt PH from Franz was the way I decided to go. And it was rebuilt by somebody that knows what they are doing, not me. Lol. I know there will be somebody on here who will say I paid too much or whatever.....everybody has their own opinions.....and you know what they say about opinions...lol.
