Yes competition would fix it - you can't compete with the gov. though; privatize.

Re: Postal Service?

We get a lot of mail meant for other addresses. This week I got an insurance bill past due mangled up in another envelope from the mail service explaining it had been damaged en route. After a big storm two weeks back where the snow froze into an unmovable bank, and because the plow driver didn't plow close enough to the mail box, the joke in the neighborhood was that the mail lady put sticky's on people's mail boxes that she didn't want to exit her mail jeep to deliver and so stated the obvious requesting the snow be removed so she could drive up to the boxes. Normally there isn't any snow since we all maintain our boxes but the snow was solid ice. Anyway the old neither rain, nor sleat, nor snow doesn't hold up anylonger.

Re: Postal Service?

the sticky note comment reminded me, I got a long handwritten note about 5 years ago from a contract carrier complaining about something or other but I can't for the life of me remember what she was complaining about, I think she was mad that I parked my trash cans too close to the mail box one day a week and she couldn't drive her left hand drive vehicle up onto the sidewalk and deliver the mail.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on this but I was busy writing a note to my boss that in the event my job ever gets difficult, I won't be performing my duties that day.

It may be a regional thing. I live in Levittown, NY, in a development of 18,500 homes and I am in awe of the US Postal Service. In one day I usually get mail that was sent from 100 miles. The same with sent mail. I can't say that there is never a miss-directed piece, but it is rare. I wish other services were that good.
PS, I have no connection of any kind with the Postal Service.

The USPS already has competition for their letter and other services, that used to keep them afloat. It's called technology and that's what's killing them.

Anybody write and mail a letter to anyone lately? I have not, since Military basic training 25 years ago. I don't ever bother with email any more - just text message.

Everybody I owe money to (which is plenty), has begged me to use "e-statements" and "e-payments". I did and now can pay all bills on-line in minutes, for free. Corporations save billions, not sending and processing paper statements, a good portion of which is postage.

USPS used to make boatloads of money, off of bulk rate printed catalog and magazine mailings. I'm too busy for magazines and probably not have recieved 8 printed catalogs in the last year.

Internet catalogs cost nearly nothing to produce and people would rather search them, than browse a printed catalog. No time.

IMO no Company in their right mind, would get into 1st class mail, in 2012, even if they could.

I also get all my bills electronically, and pay them the same. All my big payments are automatic and electronic, I still get 4 or 5 mag subs every month and a mailbox full of junk mail every day

E-mail is not hurting them. Most people don't write letters anymore they just call

When I visit my brother, I have to park far enough away from the mailbox so the mail carrier don't have to get out of the jeep - or I will hear about it! I think the usps has done a great job for as long as I can remember - it just seems that they arn't as diligent anymore around here. It might be that they change routes so often. My uncle use to deliver mail for 30 years - he had the same route for a super long time.

Re: Postal Service?

As mentioned before I never received the new debit card that was sent out weeks before and then had to go and get them to send another one. Where the first one went no one knows. Today the same thing happened with the new credit card the wife ordered several weeks ago from the same state credit union we use. She called and they said it had been mailed to her 4 weeks ago yet we havent received it....What the hell is going on? Monday we are going to file a complaint with the local mail service but I feel sure that wont do any good.. I believe its because we have had several differant mailmen and proving which one lost it would be imposible. Now we are waiting on our state tax refund and even though it has been only a couple of weeks since we filed who is to say that we will get it only to learn 6 or 8 weeks from now that it was sent out weeks before and again no one knows where it went..I am sick of this crap. From now on we will never have the credit union mail use anything important and will will demand that we go and pick it up in person but the damage has been done and 2 important ID documents are gone...I am very pissed off to say the least.

Re: Postal Service?

I hate going through the usps for anything ups or fedx for me. usps has lost or delivered things months after ordered and if you do file a complaint with the local mail service. It was months after I recived the item that then they replied to the complaint so when I buy a high priced item if they will not send ups or fedx tell them will not buy.

Re: Postal Service?

You have had good luck with UPS - not me. They delivered 3, out of 4, of my packages to the wrong addresses. I was waiting for a $419.00, HVLP spray gun, and caught the driver coming up to my neighbors house ( no one living there for 3, months ) so I asked if he had anything for me, that I was tracking a spray gun that was suppose to be on the UPS truck for delivery - he said nothing for you today, and took my package to the vacant residence? Fed X is my favorite.

Ya I have been lucky with the ups I guess and the fedx also but usps not plus two months after they replied to the complaint, two months after that they replied and ask if I would consider giving them another try. I cannot reply here as what I replied to them.

They are OK for normal correspondence. Anything important does not go via USPS. Period!
