How would I know if my seals in the powerhead were starting to fail. My 70 hp johnson outboard when I put in gear dies. If I pop the choke it takes off and goes. I know this means it is starving for fuel but we have checked everything else ie. crbs clean fuel pressure compression fuel line filter and probably other things too. Any ideas before tearing apart.

Re: dale kennedy

did the mechanic rebuild the carbs with new rebuild kits or just take apart and clean? New rebuild kits should be installed. It does sound like a carb. issue. The choke making it go is a classic sign of carbs needing attention.
What year motor is this? May help to replace fuel lines with newer ethanol friendly ones if the motor is an older model, or at least blow them out with compressed air if the motor is newer (and has newer style hoses made for ethanol).

The year is an 1989 and no the carbs were not rebuilt. Are you talking about fuel lines from the tank to motor or fuel lines in the motor
