power pack failure?

aside from overheating, what can cause it?
i recently bought new coils and power packs for my 1981 140 model number j140tlcim after about a half an hour of running BOTH power packs failed, the engine didnt overheat or anything they just cut out! what can cause this ?

they were under warranty so i sent them back but id like to prevent this again if at all possible ...

while im waiting im doing some tests on the electrical system and found a bad rectifier could this cause it ?

a mechanic friend of mine said that my battery was too small (650cca) and that could have caused it but it seems to roll over VERY fast and before the powerpacks went out it would start on the first revolution and i dont see where the charge coil circuit ties into the battery on my wiring diagram?

thanks

Re: power pack failure?

The only thing common is the 'kill" wires, any voltage on these wire from say a chaffed wiring harness, miswired "kill" switch or dirty keyswitch will kill a pack. Other thing that will kill a pack is a defective coil as it will "buck" voltage back into pack but 4 coil bad at once is unlikely....

Re: power pack failure?

ill check for voltage there that would be the black and yellow wires right?
im asumming id check for this voltage with the packs hooked up and the engine off right?

ive also read somewhere that a bad ground can cause "kickbacks" like you speak of is this true?

bad grounds can cause many problems always good idea to check and re tighten. I took out a rectifier in my 2000 johnson 150, got stuck in mud and ran it with hot light on for about 4-5 minutes.

Re: power pack failure?

thanks sparkie i read through that earlier ... im kind of at an impass until my DVA adapter gets here everything else looks good no chaffed wires or loose connections that ive found but i plan on going over it again once the DVA, rectifier, and powerpacks get here

on the coils and power packs, should the ground go between the mounting tab and the block or should it go under the bolt head and washer ?
