My 1987 Johnson 50 HP J50TLCUD has no power when in gear, runs ok with warm up throttle. Changed pump and fuel feed line from tank, no fix. Both plugs firing. Does this motor require an air filter in the chamber attached to carburator intakes? Any suggestions? Thanks

Re: Power Problem Continues

There is no air filter.

With both spark plugs removed, does the spark jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP!? Note that the 7/16" gap is important!

What is the individual compression of the cylinders? Should be 100+ psi and even on both cylinders.

If the above is as it should be, the carburetors are no doubt fouled, gummed, clogged. In which case, remove, clean, and rebuild them.
