Good Day all.....2000 Four Winns Horizon 200 with 5.0 GiPwtr engine.

Started it up for the first time this year and it started and ran great....after about 10 minutes started hearing a horrific whining noise from the engine....at first i though it may be the engine - outdrive coupler but on further inspection found it was the power steering pump....pulled the belt off and the sound was gone.

does anyone know if a Diy'er can rebuild these pumps or if i can find a reman anywhere? new ones seem to be going for about $600.

thanks for any input

Guy

Google GM saginaw pump rebuild kit. Spend the $11 and rebuild it. Yes, $11. And there are hundreds of rebuild videos

A new pump is only $50 (its a GM truck PS pump with a slightly different can)

also, if you ran the pump out of fluid for only a few minutes, just add oil back to the pump.

they are an extremely simple pump and dont get damaged that easy.

then find where your leak is.

There is no leak....I believe a bearing is squealing.....it’s also full of fluid

may want to check, most likely it was belt squeal.

Seemed like everything was spinning correctly....that being said...I am going to put the belt back on and check it again later today

Just a little update.

put power steering pump belt back on and made sure it was tight.....started up the boat and no squealing!

let it run a few minutes and noticed the exhaust risers were getting very hot. shut down

pulled the raw water pump and the impeller was stripped and chunks of rubber fell out of the hoses. replaced that and flushed the hoses (which were dry) started up and ran perfectly for about 1/2 hour.

whew....i was panicking about the power steering pump but the squealing i initially heard must have been the impeller disintegrating.
