Hi, wondering if anybody could help with the problem I am experiencing? I have a 1990 Force 125hp outboard. The problem is with the power trim and tilt, It consists of two cylinders and a seperate shock absorber. The Trim works perfectly and is 100% reliable, the problem is with the Tilt sometimes it works OK, sometimes it works but very slowly. and sometimes it gets to the limit of the trim and then the tilt stops completely! The motor works OK and the RPM is OK. Their are no leaks and the leak-down tests work OK.

I have studied the Clymer Manual which doesn't seem to highlight this problem.

Any help would be much appreciated.

regards Owen Collar.

When is this happening? on the trailer, tied to a dock, or under way I know if there is to much pressure on the motor the tilt will not work ie if you were under way and had the throttle up above idle ect. If this happens on the trailer or not under way I would look at the pivot point and make sure it is free and easy to move.

Re: Power Trim and Tilt (Intermittent Tilt Problem)

Have you checked the fluid level? After checking, and filling if needed, close it up and cycle the tilt up and down a few times. Then check the fluid again. Repeat if needed.

You must have looked at fig. 1 on page 523. I think the words "shock absorber" in the diagram are referring to the spot on the lower leg where it contacts the trim piston. The small piston in the middle is the piston for the trim movement. THe two larger pistons take over from there and tilt the motor all the way up. See drawing on page 527 in manual.

Someone correct me on this if I am wrong on this.

Re: Power Trim and Tilt (Intermittent Tilt Problem)

Thanks for the replies, The fault is happening on the trailer out of the water. I have just recently greased all the nipples! Could it be that the friction is now too high? What would I do to remedy that?

The oil is new and full, I have cycled the Trim and Tilt several times. (The engine does lift if you give it manual assistance whilst somebody mans the switch!)

Regards Owen

Re: Power Trim and Tilt (Intermittent Tilt Problem)

OwenCollar,

I have a Force 92/120 and was experiencing problems with my tilt, it would work fine, then with no reason stop, pressed the up/down nothing, finally after 5 minutes of pressing the trim tab it would work, 1 of my relays went bad, I first switched the relays to see which 1 was bad, then got a new 1 at NAPA for 12 bucks, always worked fine after that. Is yours doing any of that?

Had similar experience... loosened the manual tilt override bleed, and manually put the motor at full tilt, then filled it with oil (only took but a scant few ounces), then cycled it a couple of time, and added approx 1/2 to 1 oz. more... Hasn't fouled up since...

Good Luck...

I don't think it's a relay because the motor is still spinning.

Re: Power Trim and Tilt (Intermittent Tilt Problem)

There was a post of a very similar problem from a guy in Bahrain? I believe.

Can we search by member location?
Maybe JB knows.
Or maybe it was lost in the September postings gone missing?

Anyway, He took the pump and motor housing apart and found a crack in an inner sleeve that was allowing oil to flow back into the pump and prevent pressure from building beyond a certain
level. He was able to repair it with some sort of plastic welding compound.

I would say you should try to save you unit if possible, as a new complete unit from Merc, if still available, is about $800 US. A used or rebuilt pump will cost about $350 US.

Good Luck.
