black goes to engine block for ground. red goes to the circuit breaker which in turn goes to positive battery connection at starter. If you did not get a circuit breaker then install an inline fuse between battery/starter and red wires. the two small wires are control. most boats came with trim wiring between dash and engine that is already attached to your terminal block. All you need is a "single pole double throw, center off, momentary contact" switch. Sounds complicated but almost any hardware or boat supply place will have it for around $5. You wire the switch with 5A fuse, 12v input, and two outputs (one to each the control leads in pic).

if I want to put a switch on the motor all I do is parallel the switches right.
and the two heavy black wires that come out of both of the relays goes to ground. how big should the fuse be for the red wire because I don't have a circuit breaker for it.

Re: power trim and tilt

try 20A to start with. it varies with different revisions of motor but my test bench rarely draws more than 15A regardless

any switch will do. It is impossible for a two position switch to have fewer than 3 wires. If it has more then you're not obligated to use them all. The local Sea & Shore boat supply store has perfectly good switches for $6 each. The only thing of any real consequence is that you must not be able to push up & down at same time. That would cause a short and burn something up.
