POWER TRIM FLUID

I have a 1994 60 hp merc. on a pontoon. The trim motor is shot. I had to drill out the relief bypass plug and replace it. Can I add fluid and move the motor up and down by hand and get it to stay at the right position? Will this draw fluid back into the cylinder? It would be ok the way it is but in reverse it will raise up. Any suggestions.
Kenny

Re: POWER TRIM FLUID

Ken,

I don't have a clue as to what your problem is, but with the info you issued, what could you possibly hurt by doing what you suggested?

All the trim motor does is pressurizes fluid and the up/down switch determines where it is directed.

In the absence of the motor, if you vent the fluid chamber, you should be able to manually move the engine wherever you want. Or just disconnect the trim shaft from the engines transom bracket and do what you need to do.

HTH

Mark

Re: POWER TRIM FLUID

I'm just trying to understand: did you say that you drill the relief valve, the plastic one numbered #16 on this schematic?

If so, you probably messes the passageways and the valve is no longer doing is job when fully seated in, i.e. it now act as if the valve was open, even when it's close, so the engine won't stay in position. If this happen, i'm affraid that nothing will help you other than getting a new unit ($$$).

But maybe you're lucky and didn't broke anything. If so, manually raise the engine, engage the tilt lock lever, open the fill plug (#15 on schematic) and add ATF fluid. Add a trim motor ($$$), cycle it a couple of times and recheck oil level.

Hope it help.

Re: POWER TRIM FLUID

Saumon,
The plug was broken , I used a left handed bit and drilled it out. Did not get into the threads the bit unscrewed the plug. I just want the motor to stay down in reverse. I really dont need the power trim on a pontoon. Any way to lock it in position without power trim working?
Kenny
