Power Trim Issue

I have a 1981 model Mercury 115hp on a 16ft ProCraft. It has a power trim unit, which seems to work fine lifting and lowering the engine. However, if the engine is raised about halfway, I can grab the lower unit and lift the engine another 6 inches or so effortlessly.

I can't push the engine down, but I can lift it with my hand. Holds good in the water in Drive, but I don't know about reverse because I rarely use it... Any suggestions? It's been like this since I bought it (1.5 years or so), and I thought it was time to find out if this is normal or not!!!

Re: Power Trim Issue

BD,

Sounds about normal to me. If you look at the trim rams as you lift it you'll see they don't move very much, that's why you can lift it. With the engine in the down position, to move it up would require a lot of movement in the rams, and that would then indicate air in the system. If you do have air, just run it full up and full down a few times, that will purge the air, but make sure the resevior is full.

Chris........
