If I needed to replace the motor for the Power T/T
unit for a 1985 140 Evinrude, do I need to remove the engine? Works OK but its looking kind of rusty. Any tell tale signs that its on the way out? My Clymers manual describes tests but
I didn't see anything about replacement. Is this something I can do? Anyone know the procedure?
Thanks!

Yes the engine will need to be unbolted.

Sal.... On that engine, you can remove the PTT mounting bolts, disconnect the electric motor wiring, and remove the top pin from the tilt rod.

After that, with the tilt rod being forced to the down position, and with the engine in the up tilt position, you can tilt the top portion of the PTT assy back and away from the mounting area and out of the engine.

The eariler engines necessitated the removal of the port transom bracket (a real pain) but your engine's transom brackets are designed so that removal of the PTT is easily permitted.

Forgot to ask- are there tell tale signs the tilt/trim motor is on its way out. I'm inquiring more because its rusty rather than its actual performance.

Unfortunately that two wire electric motor will work perfectly (usually) right up to the moment of failure.

When you have the unit on the bench, remove all of the rust. If all of the metal appears good, not pitted.... simply surface rust, I'd suggest cleaning it thoroughly, prime it with green zink chromate primer (available at any marine dealership), then paint it whatever color required.

However, if it's pitted badly, replace it rather than wait for a ruined outing.

Re: Power Trim / Tilt Motor replacement

I have a question concerning my Power Tilt & Trim on my 96 40hp Johnson (BJ40LEDS). I had a rear end collision while I was trailering my boat which resulted in the tilt rod being bent (among other damages). The PT&T motor works fine, only the bent rod keeps it from extending all the way up and down.

My questions are these:
1. Can I replace just the tilt rod, where the rest of the unit seems to be OK?
2. If yes to #1, where can I get this rod, ad how much (estimate)?
3. I tried to remove the PT&T motor but stopped when I couldn't see how to disconnect the wire to the motor and wasn't sure how to remove the upper pin (held in on one side with a cotter pin of sorts).

Thanks for any help you can lend,
Bob
