Re: power tuning 140 hp mercruiser

Many boat engines are high compression, higher than auto engines I think. My engine is running above top dead center not below it. On a car you may want to advance your timing as a way to increase your rpms rapidly but a boat engine is a whole different animal. A curve kit as it used to be called was a set of heavier weights and lighter springs to be put in an auto distributer to advance timing to get better acceleration off the line as the vacuum dropped from the rapid acceleration of putting your foot to the floor. Anyway, I'd suggest going to the dealer and getting OEM parts for your distibuter. I don't know what kind of damage it would cause to a marine engine by putting in a curve kit but I would guess at the least you would get detonation which is not a good thing and over time you'd probably burn holes in the tops of your pistons. Anyway, you have a boat not a circle track car. If it breaks down you just cant get out and push. That is my motto as an aircraft mechanic. If the helicopter breaks down I cant just open the door and get out and push.

Good luck,

Wes

Personally, I'd take up bondo on his offer to give you a complete dist. at least get it back to OEM and then see if it runs correctly or satisfactorly. As you're describing you are running the Dist at retartded, (eer... normal starting timing) and not getting any advance so, yes it will run, but kind of doggish on the top end... Put in the correct dist and she'll wake right up on you... Good luck....

yeah,

I've been in touch with bondo, I've got him on hold with the distributor as I may have located some new old stock springs.

Chopper;

I just want to get my distributor back to original not recurve or any fancy hp stuff. the correct springs are NLA. That's what got me to start this post in the first place.

I'm told that the part number originally was:

IG-817BS if anybody has crossed this number or can I would appreciate the info.

DougV>

Re: power tuning 140 hp mercruiser

Just a quick update, I wound up going with the used delco distributor from Bondo. Didn't install it yet but I'm sure it will be fine. Trying to find out the best way to wire it (has a petronix ignitor in it), Some say run a seperate wire, some say tap into the electric choke wire. I'll have to look into my setup when I pull it from storage and test some voltages before making my decision.

I'd like to take this opportunity to let everyone know what a great guy Bondo is. He shipped me a used distributor and asked for the cost of shipping and a donation. I could have paid the shipping and sent it back if I didn't want or need it. I hope what I sent him is acceptable. There really are honest/trusting people in the world still. This is the kind of guy I would love to have as a neighbor and not just because he is a boat guru.

Oh and one more thing he also said as part of the deal I have to (probably would anyway) help someone out in need. So here I am. I may not be the smartest guy here but I do know a little about a lot.

Still wouldn't mind finding those springs for the prestolite.

Thanks to everyone for there input,

DougV>
