Powerpack Question

Hi everyone, I come to you from the Evinrude side (had a few of them), but just purchased a 1988 Force 125 in excelent running condition (needs nothing) for I think a more-than-fair $600.<br /><br />My question: The last owner had a one powerpack and two coils replaced, the new (to him) ones are black. The original other set are blue. I've heard baaaad things about blue. Is this myth or reality? Should I just replace over the winter and keep the blue ones onboard as spares? And what year did they move to the black ones?<br /><br />Thanks in advance!

Yes the Black is better.<br />I'd replace them, or atleast buy them and keep the new ones handy for when they are needed.<br /><br />The coils are relatively cheap. The powerpack is pricey.

What Rocoe said, but just wanted to add, that blue are original equipment, and have performed well to date. They can't harm your motor in any way, and were reliable under normal condidtions. They will blow in a NY Minute however, if a plug fouls, or a plug wire comes off underway, or any other malfunction that would keep them from completing the normal circuit to ground. When testing, allways provide a path to ground (like a spark gap or spark plug grounded to frame, or grounding the plug wire to frame).<br /><br />I'm sure this is the same story with the black ones, but I think they are tougher, and do not poof so readily.
