I got confused with the wording on the labels of each different bottle of gear lube and purchased what i believe to be the wrong type for my application. I have a 1964 evinrude 40hp. Its a manual shift. I now see that the HI-VIS is the correct type, or i could even use 85w-90 gear oil. My question is if i can still use the Premium Blend in the lower end. Thank you

If the Premium Blend you have is the Premium Blend that is used in the electric shift gearcase units..... then no, you can't use it in your standard mechanical shift unit.

Mercury Premium Blend or Sierra Premium would be the correct oil. As long as it not type "C"

Thanks guys, looks like I'll keep what I have. Any slick ways to fill the lower end from the bottom?

You need a pump. They are cheap, usually about 10 bucks or so. Makes things easy. Change the crush washers while at it.

Re: Premium Blend and HI-VIS gear oil

Back in the 60s and early 70s, Type C(now called Premium Blend) was the only gear oil marketed by OMC and it was used in all the gearcases, Electric and Mechanical.

Jimmbo..... I recall that era also but that use lasted only a very short period of time. It was found that the mechanical shift models would be slinging the light weight lube off, resulting in lower unit failure, hence the change to HiVis 80/90w for the mechanical shift models.
