Re: Preventing sinking at dock

My boat, had never been in a slip, and being over 20 years old was quite worrisome for me. What I did was put it in the slip and check on it a day layer. And then check on it a week later. I knew the bilge pumps were good if nothing else. Just check on it, seeing that no water is making its way into the boat will make it a lot easier and reassuring to leave it for longer in the slip.

Well, the benefit of lifts comes more from having a permanent or long-term boating slip. If you have the possibility of getting rid of the boat, or changing slips/locations, then it doesn't make sense to install a lift. If you are at your own private dock, then it makes a bit more sense to install the lift. On our dock (private dock @ lakeside residence), we leave the boats on lifts because we aren't at the lake-house for weeks, sometimes months at a time. The covered dock + lift keeps us from having to worry about wind/rain/waves causing damage to the boat. Now, lifts due fail on rare occasion, so the boat still has to be able to maintain itself in that event but it's a risk I hope the battery/bilge pumps can mitigate. Lifts also eliminate the need for a bottom job or haul out for cleaning/acid wash.
