Just paid $13+ for a qt of Mercruiser Hi Perforrmance gear lube...did it just go up?

You know, you can also use (NON-limited slip) Mobil1 synthetic GL-5 , Volvo syn, Amsoil, or other synthetic 75W-90 gear lubricants. There is no NMMA or API "marine" specification for gear lubricants.....
No no no, please don't use automotive gear lubes. You need HYPO 90 oil. Regular gearlubes will not mix with water and will turn into gel if you get it in your drive. HYPO 90 will absorb up to 50% water and will keep its lubercating qualities. It will also drain out afterward and not just lump up like a thick milkshake.

YOU, I believe.....my personal experience... when I had a small leak with merc synthetic lube, it burnt the fluid, but it didn't phase separate, fluid change, fix leak, no probelms. Couple of other small water leaks in drives using other lubes, they phase separated, turned to jello, etc... and the gears were done for. This is exactly as one would expect based on the chemistry...
