In the last half of 2010 I remember the best price I could find was $10.96 at Walmart; now it's up to $11.96 but still cheaper than anywhere else I've looked.

You know, you can also use (NON-limited slip) Mobil1 synthetic GL-5 , Volvo syn, Amsoil, or other synthetic 75W-90 gear lubricants. There is no NMMA or API "marine" specification for gear lubricants.....

At The shop we used merc gear oil and found that it would break down and turn black after 50 hours of use, now we use BRP HPF, and even in the gear cases from the 80's that have never been rebuild we have customers running one to three years on a lube change. These are the customers that service their own, during winterizing in the shop we change it regardless.

No no no, please don't use automotive gear lubes. You need HYPO 90 oil. Regular gearlubes will not mix with water and will turn into gel if you get it in your drive. HYPO 90 will absorb up to 50% water and will keep its lubercating qualities. It will also drain out afterward and not just lump up like a thick milkshake.

So.........your suggesting that people use a brand name (BP) "HYPO 90" gear oil? Can you please point us to the ASTM standard test for up to 50% water miscibility of gear oil ? In reading about gear oils in general, I have only found Mercury to claim their oil will lose no lubrication quality with up to 10% water intrusion and Amsoil actually posts data meeting an ASTM standard test with up to 10%.

No one else mentions 50% water.......

Re: Price of Gear Lube

my personal experience... when I had a small leak with merc synthetic lube, it burnt the fluid, but it didn't phase separate, fluid change, fix leak, no probelms. Couple of other small water leaks in drives using other lubes, they phase separated, turned to jello, etc... and the gears were done for. This is exactly as one would expect based on the chemistry...
