Removed old transom got new one cut and ready to install. The aluminum have some ver minor pitting which I was going to skim with some JB then sand smooth. My question is should I spray a coat of primer on the inside skin prior to installing the new wood. Forgot to mention boat is a 74 Starcraft 16 ss and the new transom is made from marine plywood with titbond III for glue and 3 coats of spar on entire piece. Thanks

Primer is not a top coat and is porous, that's how it helps a top coat to stick. Put a finish coat over the primer to help reduce future pitting, primer alone won't help.

you need a clean surface to remove the oxidation that forms on aluminum just from the air. as in, sand it, and immediately wipe it down and prime it

you need a good zinc phosphate primer to stick to aluminum. you need a good paint to seal the primer.

make sure that you do not use pressure treated lumber anywhere near aluminum.

I'd sand it, prime it with a good self etching primer, an then 2-3 coats of Rustoleum Pro Paint with the added Acrylic Enamel Hardener. She Won't corrode again for a very long time
