If you pump up a priming bulb till its hard and you come back after a couple of hours should the bulb still be hard?

It will lose prime over time. How long depends on how good your connections and fittings are. I prime once a day usually. Prepared to be educated otherwise though, just my personal experience.
Just my 2 cents as well.

also when the motor is running the bulb will go soft, as the fuel pump draws fuel thru it.
