1980 Evinrude I have this problem with the engine. Runs good sometimes sometime it does not
Let me explain sometimes it has full power goes fast sometime it just will go slow only.
I replaced both coils for the engine both cylinders are working it will run on any one cylinder are the other ok.
I notice that this problem usually happens when I going fast and jump a wave and the boat
landing cause the problem. Now it just runs slow. I check all connections they seem to be good.
After a while it will run good at lest that the way it's been. The same problem happen to me before after I
get out in ocean and jump some big waves and hit the water hard the landing force cause something
not to work right. Anyone got any ideas of what causing this.

Re: Problem after I jump a wave and land

Hi CoolCom.....

Had a problem come into my shop like that one time. Drove me nuts. Boat would run great in still water but once it got choppy, the thing would slow down.

What I finally did was pull the carbs off and open the float bowls. The last bowl I opened, always got to be the last, I found a soft plug splinter in the bowl. Very small but once it got up against the high speed jet, it was big enough. You didn't post the HP of yer Rude so I'm taking for granted ya' got at least one carb....so take a look at the bowls and see if you can find some foregin object floating around in there.

Ok I took apart both carburetors on my engine. Had some grit small (particles) in the bottom of the bowl cleaned the carburetors found like sand or just grit in some places behind the screws. I found what looks to be very much the problem the bottom bowl the float needle value seat screw when I took out it pretty much full of stuff to clog it up. I put it back together and started it up it ran real good and real quiet. Now For the real test will be out in the water I plan on trying it out tomorrow. I will let you all know how it runs after I try it in the water also. I got my fingers crossed on this one.

Be a good idea to have another boat go with you if you are going out into the ocean to jump waves - - at least until you are sure that your problem is solved.

SoLittle:
OutboardJim :
Well I went out jump some waves in the ocean a lone but I got a marine radio check first so I could call a tow if I need one. I never went out so far before Was In the Deep Water 300 600 ft. I fixed that carburetors problem but still have a problem it only run good with the cover off good on the way back Something critical is shorting out when I have the cover on because I tried to put it on when it was idling got shocked I figured out There something touching that metal than locks the cover or motor case on. Because it ran good with it off all the time I check . So today I looked at it and I see where the metal in the motor cover is hitting I mean I see a mark on the rubber spark plug boot. But I can fix this problem by turning around the coil so that part faces in the other direction. Then it won't be touching and causing that short also got some plastic tubing for putting wires in and to put over the spark plugs wires and some other critical wires and fix them wires in there to make sure they have plenty of rubber between them but I got be careful because the motor heat might melt this stuff so I got watch that and check it .

One of your spark plug wires is shorting out against the cowl.

Check the wires for abrasions and keep them away from the cowling.
