Problem going at high rpms

Boat runs great to about 3000 rpm then it makes a grinding noise and the rpm start to climb and the boat starts slowing down. You can pull the throttle back down to nuetral and start climbing back up with no problem until you hit around 3000. Already marked the prop hoping to find a spun prop but that wasn't the case. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be going on. Thanks in advance.

Without knowing what year and horsepower can't give you detailed fix but it may be something as simple as a cable adjustment, or something as serious as a worn out clutch dog/forward gear.

Sorry, The motor is a 1998 90hp force.
