Problem keeping 1990 Johnson 4hp Runnig after start

Hi,

I have a 1990 Johnson 4hp deluxe. After I start it I need to cycle the choke in and out to keep it running. I can find a choke position where it will stay running but I have to nurse it via the choke to get any higher speed or power and I have to stand by to move the choke in and out if it fades then refind a position where it will stay running.

Any ideas?

Sounds like it might be time to overhaul the carb.

I take it you can not make any improvement by adjusting the mixture screw .. it is only an idle mixture screw anyway.

It sounds as though your carb is in dire need of a clean.
