Problem w/ Motor bogging

I have a 1987 85hp Force on a 17' bayliner. It is running rough in low idle and dies some times and runs good at about 90% throttle but if you run at 100% it runs good for a few minutes then starts to lose power. If i pull off of the throttle and then give it gas again it will speed back up. I also noticed that it will tend to lose power when I hit waves which is kind of wierd. If it does happen to stall it usually starts right back up again but as I said will constantly die if you are going through a no wake area at low idle.

Any Ideas???

Re: Problem w/ Motor bogging

Jeremy

There are so many things this could be, fuel issue, mechanical, weak ignition, etc. Start with the easy stuff first. I had an issue like this and, for me, it was water in the gas. Do a search at top of page on "power loss" and you'll find literally dozens of posts on this. Good Luck!

It could very likely be a fuel problem seeing how i did not winterize it last fall. I just think it is weird how it will bog as i hit waves, trying to think what in the carb being clogged could cause that.

Also, is idleing in neutral it sputters alot.

Re: Problem w/ Motor bogging

Jeremy

Outboards and weird are synonymous. LOL. I would eliminate the fuel as an issue if it were mine. That is the most likely cause and the easiest to resolve. Start at the tank and work to the engine. Make sure you've got new gas and oil. Check the fuel pump, the lines, then the carbs. When I rebuilt my carbs this year there was varnish on the bottom of the bowls. Not a lot but it doesn't take much to clog or restrict the jets. A partial restriction can cause all kinds of problems and eventually could damage your motor if it causes a cylinder to run lean. A manual is a must for outboard motor owners. Good Luck!

Took the carbs apart and cleaned real good w/ gumout. They werent to bad but I also took the fuel pump and filter off and the filter had a big gob of stuff in it and the diaphram in the pump had a small tear in the middle of it. So I put the carbs back on and now im waiting for my fuel pump kit.

Re: Problem w/ Motor bogging

Jeremy, I will be keeping a big eye on this post as I have just purchased a 1985 17 foot cimmaron with an 85 force on it. The first day on the water, (today) it ran really good in the upper rpm range and then would some times die when letting off the throttle. restart then open her up was the only way to get going very well. I hope your issues turn around for the good and I will post a question as well as keep a close eye on this one.

Good luck, Sorry I couldnt help, But I'm there for ya. hehehhh
