Problem With Ford Escape Idle

Hello -

I have a 2003 Ford Escape 3.0L V6 with 75000 miles.

I've owned it since new and never had any problems with it.

Today while sitting in traffic, I sort of thought it was a little sluggish to accelerate but didn't pay much attention because I was sitting in stop and go traffic so didn't really have much to pay attention to. Well, then while sitting at a stop the car started to surge - the tachometer would bounce between 1000 RPM and about 500 RPM and the whole thing was kind of rocking sort of like you were bouncing your foot on the brake. The surging would go away with acceleration. It would surge in drive and neutral. This lasted for maybe 10 or 15 minutes in stop and go traffic and then just disappeared and ran normally. There was never a check engine light, and still isn't.

Last week I had the radiator flushed, oil changed, and tires rotated. I also installed a new battery. Today has been rainy outside. I filled the gas tank this past Sunday ($1.87/gallon - YEAY!). I checked under the hood when I got home and the coolant may be a little low but still within spec.

I put probably 20 miles on it since the problem (running some errands - turning the car off and on) and it hasn't come back.

Any ideas what happened? Is there something I need to inspect further?

Thank you.

i'd double check the vacuum lines, one may have been knocked off when the work was done on it. I would also check the air filter, and when was the last time you had the fuel filter replaced?

I thought about vacuum lines and took a quick look (30 seconds in the dark and rain) and didn't really notice anything probably because everything is covered up by a big plastic cover so there isn't much to see. I'll look a little harder though just to be sure. The air filter isn't all that old and the fuel filter is probably a month old.

Probably needs some upper end cleaner ........ try a bottle of techron and see if that yields a change.

Clean your throttle body and air idle control motor. When you go to the parts store make shure you ask for a cleaner that is safe with your throttle body. There is a protective coating on them. What it sounds like to me is the throttle body/Air idle motor has gotten dirty and is trying to compensate for it.

Thanks, everyone. It sounds like it's probably less serious than I thought it was. We're going out of state for Thanksgiving so I didn't have much time to troubleshoot it and dropped it off at the shop this morning because I just had bad thoughts all night of us being broke down 150 miles from home on I-95. This is good information though because I'll be able to validate what they tell me with what you've told me here. Plus, the shop gave me an Explorer as a loaner that's much nicer than my Escape :).

Well, I think Puddle Jumper nailed it.

The shop called yesterday - they say that the IAC (Idle Air Control) Valve needs replaced. I should be getting the car back today.

Thanks, everyone. Have a great Thanksgiving!
