Hi everyone, hope your having a great time on the water, and being safe.1977 Thompson Del Ray,400ci Chevy motor,898 Out Drive.Heres what I got.Last year,Boat got stuck in gear, had a heck of a time getting it out of gear,on and off the water. This year, the past 2 weeks,i replaced the outdrive, with a different one,new gimble bearing, new bellows, new lower shift cable, with boot, and the impeller.Made sure everything was in forward gear.Adjusted the shift cable as directed in the manual, got the newer style shift cable.

I fire the boat up today, and with it running on muffs,it still wont come out of forward gear,I think it has to do with the shifter itself, cause it moves freely, and the button that you usually push,to go from neutral to forward,or reverse,is stuck in.I can move the shifter forward, reverse, and looking at it from the underneath,it moves the throttle, but the cable doesnt move at all.

I seen a manual here that had this style shifter in it,#5 I think, but the copy I have downloaded from here lastyear, wont open now.Any suggestions on how this can be repaired,or what I need to do to get it to operate correctly. Both the upper and lower shift cables move like butter. Thanks In advance for your time, and replys

did you check your new drive went in gear forward and reverse b4 mounting it?
Also look under the drive and make sure fork from shifter went in the prongs.if it didn't you have bent shaft now

that is an old shifter and i doubt you can get parts for it any longer - you probably will have to replace the shifter and cables with a new one

as far as a manual goes i'm not sure, #5 is for TR/TRS drives and it sounds like that is not what you have - your manual for that set-up is probably #2, try downloading it again here:

your best bet is to just disassemble it carefully and note how it comes apart and look for any obvious broken parts

That doesn't look like any Merc control I have seen. I looked in manual #5, no remote controls, I looked at 2 and 1 nothing like that.
Even looked all the the OEM parts catalogs, and nothing like that.
It's probably just an aftermarket control built by Teleflex or Morse, or any others that were made back then.
Since it's not Merc, I am going to move this thread over to the Boat Topics forum, maybe someone there will know what it is and be able to help you.

Thanks DingDongs for your input,i made sure of all that when it was going together,I can move it in and out of gear with the lower cable, just when everything is hooked up,the shifter does nothing but operate the throttle.

dubs, since this is such an older shifter, what do you all recommend for a replacement shifter.I have been looking on ebay, seen alot of shifters, but really not sure on which one i should purchase. If I find one today, maybe it will get here before next weekend. Thanks for all the help, have a great day on the water everyone, whoever makes it out.

I have exact same on my 78 Aristocraft.
Undo those 3 screws and you can pull it out of the hole. The levers to move the cables are exposed on the back, so you should be able to tell if control box is pulling on cables.
Sounds like your neutral pulout is stuck in neutral and not engaging the gears when you push it in.
It is easy to take apart, then you will be able to tell if it is repairable.
