I bought a new 4 stroke 9.9 Merc a month ago and about a week after I got it home from the dealer I noticed oil on my garage floor below the motor. I checked the oil and it was all the way up to the edge of the hole that the dip stick goes in. There was way too much oil in it and this is how it came from the dealer. I contacted Mercury to complain and they made a note of it and told me to contact the dealer for repair. I did so and they picked it up and a week later they delivered it to me and said that there was a seal leaking and that is why there was oil leaking from the engine. Hmmm.....they put too much oil in it and then ran it at the shop before I picked it up originally and they wonder why it is leaking. That is the first problem. The dealer put too much oil in the motor. The dealer couldn't however tell me what seal was bad? I find that strange. So I take my new motor out on the lake yesterday to see how it runs and it runs like total s**t. Starts right up, but after running it for 5 to 10 minutes, I am not able to push the choke in without it dying. After running it for half an hour I can only run it with the choke half way in. Any ideas on what might be wrong with it? I took it to another dealer this weekend as I don't want that other dealer touching it anymore. Do I have the right to request a new motor from Merc since this hasn't run since it has been delivered? Just want to know what my options are. I know that the dealer that has it now is getting really busy as many people are getting their motors out of storage for the new season. I don't want my motor sitting at the shop for a month or two when it bought it new and can't even use it.

How did you get the engine home, mdmataya?

Lie it on it's side?? Or did you follow the instructions in the Owner's Manual about transporting the engine?? Do this wrong and you are guaranteed an oil leak if the seal around the dipstick leaks. You will also get oil in the intake manifold and gum the carb so that it will run lousy (a term I recommend on iboats).

Your carb needs to be cleaned, you need to read your Owner's Manual and you probably need to apologize to your original dealer.

If, on the other hand, you transported the engine correctly just ignore the above, get yourself a Repair Manual and clean your carburetor. All will be well. :)

Thanks for the reply. The only time I transported it was when it was on the back of the boat. When the dealer picked it up they hauled it to and from my house in the back of a truck and layed it on its side with the tiler handle down. I will wait and see what the other dealer says when the get done looking at it. Hopefully it is just a problem with a dirty carb.
Thanks,
-mdmataya
