Hello,
I have a 6 hp Evinrude "Fisherman", 1973, model 6302S....After having found one of the points stuck, I ran across a discussion about conversion from points/condensers to electronic chips. I watched several videos & read multiple accounts of where this conversion has apparently been performed successfully, and even resulted in the motor running better overall. I decided to bite the bullet and make the switch from points to chips.
After one mishap where I didn't have the wires properly secured under the flywheel, I got all the conversion done and wiring secured. I used the Nova II chips and checked the spark...all good. On the water, the motor ran like a dream.....but for only about 30 minutes.....then on only one cylinder....back home, I determined that one of the chips had failed....I assumed a bad batch of chips and got two new ones, but this time I used a different brand from my local small engine shop.....back in the water and, this time, after around 15 minutes of perfection, the same thing happened again.....one cylinder (different from the first time) not firing, which I later troubleshot back to another bad chip.
So, I'm confused.....reading all these "success stories" about eliminating points/condensers....what am I missing? Should I try a different kind/type of chip or just convert back to points/condensers? Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
FYI.....on both of the "in water failures", after back home and on my bench, there was no wiring interference and both coils were found to be working....definitely the chip(s). The motor is a manual start, 2-cylinder model.
Thanks!
