Problems with going forward but can still go in reverse

Have a mercruiser I/O on a 2004 Searay 200 sport. Recently when I put in water, I can put in reverse with no problem. When I engage forward, engine
revs very high but prop does not move. I can often get it to eventually grab forward, but not after multiple attempts and usually an awful thud (as the engine engages the drive at much higher speed than it should). Once I run it in forward for a minute or so, it is very easy to engage the motor (like it was when it ran before this problem). Reverse as I said is never an issue. All my fluids are topped off, so nothing missing there.

The boat sits in a lift under boat house. Never had this problem before, so am hoping someone can tell me what to do. Hate to have to pull it out to have it repaired.

Help please.

Welcome to iBoats

Have a mercruiser I/O

Which particular Mercruiser, they make quite a range. An engine capacity and serial number would be the most helpful. Is it an Alpha drive or one of the Bravos? If Alpha, which one?

Without the extra information (engine serial number) to is difficult to say, but I would be looking at the lower shift cable. Sorry but the leg's got to be removed for that one.

Check the shift cable adjustment and the shift cable travel comming from the shifter.
