Productive Arvo but Bilge Pump advice needed

Ive had some fun, I fitted the new water filter and fitted new fuel hose and squeezy bulb, I ran the motor up she started real easy, ran the revs up to 5000 no probs there, the trim seem to work under power on the hose but in the water may be different, when I shift into reverse I get the usual grinding but no clunk but the prop is spinning madly so I guess the reverse works, mechanical jobs seem to be done and all things are going well,

As for the bilge pump, they state the location should be the deepest part of the hull where water will gather, I assume this will be the deepest part of the keel so directly under the floor up front, they also state the skin fitting should be well above the water line so water can feed back through the pump when not running, I got a float switch for the floor but not sure I want to use it, whats the general consensus of opinion with this set up.

what displaces more water in a sinking boat...
a blocked/stuffed/otherwise not working bilge pump in an inaccessable place under the floor?
or a scared man with a bucket?
you really need to get to the pump and hoses easily so you can try and unblock hoses etc etc
all sorts of crap will be floating around just waiting to block your inlet/outlet....plastic bait bags,food bags, stubbie lids, rags/towels etc
on my nautiglass it's next to the battery on the deck floor...easy to get to

Ahhh! Water runs downhill and the engine weight is always at the back. Almost every hull sits lower at the transom. The pump belongs near the transom, close to the vee. It does not need to be directly centered . The discharge from the pump needs to be above the water line, the higher the better, usually just under the rub rail. But understand that these pumps are rated without a hose. The longer the hose and the higher the outlet (head) the less volume the pump will clear from the boat. SO: always buy a pump with more capacity than you think you need.

Good advice there guys, so Ill mount it at the rear under the floor, I can use an access panel to get at it, Ill look into making the hole tomorrow, oddlyt enough mine has a access panel up front i unscrewed it today, the bilge seems clean but however the under sid eof the ply floor is flaking badly so as this drops it will jamp up the bilge pump, so me thinks Ill chop the floor out and re lay a new floor, fitting pump first, mine has a twin bilge, left and right so will need 2 pumps, how bout pumping the bilge full off invader foam?

Bigger boats have the bildge pump in the front usually under an access panel.Some smaller boats with a cabin(adding lots more weight) have a pump up front and a pump in the back that operates while underway.

Smaller boats have it in the back. Most boats I've seen have drainage between the stringers and partitions, only needing one pump. It's a wonder your boat doesn't have a provision for a pump or a place for one?? Look around and maybe post some pics.

In the outboard well is two raised circular bits on the floor there exactly same size as a round access panel. I thought I seen transom mounted bilge pump but the local BCF is useless only stocking internal Rule pumps, thing that bugs me is my floor under the glass is flaking with age so this will eventually end up in the bilge, Im giving serious consideration to ending my fishing season now and ripping the floor out and sort all these bugs once and for all, I will pic the old girl and post here

It has 4 bilges apparently, 2 on each side of the keel the outer ones do drain into the inner bilges either side of the keel, so I need two pumps, Ive fitted the one in the starboard side, Ill fit the other one and then Ill fill it with water through the forward inspection cover and test em out, theres no escaping the fact I have to replace the floor over winter, its fairly rotten and dropping bits of ply into the bilge these will bung the pumps up, should be fun job.

Until then, get a big sponge, or glue a few together and cut an opening in it.Install the pump in it, it will allow water through and filter out the gunk/wood.
I've seen a friens setup. He took an old wet/dry vacuum and used the sponge and the cage it fits around. Installed the pump in it and glued it to the bottom and it worked great. He had trouble with rotting plywood too. Someone didn't think and used particle board to relace the floor.

Particle boards a no no it dont like water, the sponge idea is a good one Jerry I can do that quiet easily.

You can also wrap the pump with nylon replacement screen material. Use a big wire tie to hold it in place. This will stop everything but water...fishing line, seaweed, bits of flooring...

Thats a good idea too Snowman, I can use what we call shade cloth which is a synthetic material used outside for sun shade etc, that will work
