Beautiful job, djohns. If I could do work that good, I don't believe I'd be able to part with it.

I am helping a friend fix up his 15’ aluminum, that is much like your project. We are interested in painting it but have no idea where to begin. It looks to be the same color as your boat. Any info you could give me, such as paint type and prep-work would be greatly appreciated. If we could get this to come out half as good as yours, his wife might just let him keep it!!!

b.gagnon,

Here is what I did.

1. Sand entire boat with 120 grit wet sandpaper.

2. Wash entire boat with 50/50 solution of vinegar and water.

3. Apply one coat (thin) of zinc chromate paint.

4. Wet sand with 120 (very lightly).

5. Apply one coat "Metalprep" primer.

6. Wet sand with 120 grit.

7. Apply finish coat of one part epoxy paint. I used Interlux "Brightside" one part epoxy-white.

8. Wet sand with 220 grit wet sand paper.

9. Apply final coat of "Brightside" one part epoxy paint.

Hints:

1. Use only the thinners approved by the paint manufacturer.

2. Use very high quality brushes.

3. You will need one quart zinc chromate, one quart metalprep, two quarts final coat-Brightside.

I brushed mine. The Interlux paint flows out beautifully. You have to get very close to tell it's brushed.

All of the paints and thinners mentioned above are available at: www.westmarine.com

You could also use the products available from Pettit Paints. I used Interlux this time, because it was on sale.

Hi djohns19,

Considering how awesome your boat turned out, can you please give me some advice on my potential project boat? Please check out my post from 5/1/2003.

Thanks - looks great - I'd definitely keep it within the family.

Willis

Kinda thinking you lost $ on that deal DJ19. Why not disclose dollars in and out. Was probably a real good experience doing that project.
Reason I am doing a "project" boat is for the intrigue of restoring a lady that deserves to live again.
PC_Slikker

Awesome job...hope mine turns out as good. I'm working on a 1985 OMC V6 3.8L stringer i/o....on a Four Winns Horizon 190, open bow. Have stripped the inside completely. Have the engine running again, but with a couple problems with trim, tilt, and temp gauge pegging out although engine manifolds are running cool.
Your boat looks great!

Congratilations on your sale Djohns19, and good luck with the car project. I have 3 sons and a daughter. I repaired the eldest first car with him and am now doing a first car for the next, going to get his licence at spring. Good to teach the kids that way, and a real fun time too.

Sorry Pat, no lost $$$. This was my fourth project boat.

Did well.

I still won't disclose sell price, but I had a TOTAL of $2,450.00 invested.

Thanks for the kudos, everyone.
