Project Boat Sears Elgin 14' Roundabout

This is my first post here and I need some help. I have just acquired a 70's (i think) Elgin Model 63140. It is 14' with a 5' beam. From what I can tell the hull appears to be aluminum with fiberglass inside and decking. I have pulled out some glass and found a rotted support beam that runs the length of the middle. The glass i pulled comes from what appears to be an interior layer of glass as there is more glass that seems solid underneath. I will post pics of removed glass and beam tomorrow.

Does anybody have any experience with Elgin boats? I am currently looking for as much information as possible so I can be smart about my approach. Info about the year and 63140 model would be great also. Thanks!

I have continued to pull out the glass and the rotted wood underneath. The glass is thick and hard to get out. The layer underneath seems good but I am a novice so I don't know.
What are your thoughts so far? Do I need to pull up the entire inside layer of glass? How can I test to see what is good and what's not?

Every thing needs to come out and needs to be ground down to good fresh Glass.

Any tips as to the best way to pull up old glass?

41/2" grinder with a backup pad and 36 grit sanding discs.
Respirator and a Full Cover Tyvek Suit
Goggles
Talcum powder to keep the itcing down.

I've worked with fiberglass before, built a glass canoe, but i've never taken it up. Is it stupid to pry it up or is it just faster to grind through the layer?... seems like a complete mess! I'm completely new to pulling up fiberglass so assume I know nothing.

What ever it takes. It's gott come out and be ground down to clean fresh glass so the New glass can Stick.

I started the grinding process today..quite messy but overall not too bad. You said to take it down to fresh clean glass, there is a layer that was the interior glass before you get to the actual hull glass, does all of that need to come out? Or does it not matter how deep you go so long as the glass is fresh and solid? I ask because most of the glass seems good once its ground down. I will put up pics later today after I sweep up the mess.
