I received a 1958 14' Wizard with a 35 hp Evinrude outboard as a birthday gift. I am able to start the engine but it will not idle. It needs a new starter and the controls don't engage forward/reverse.

First I need help locating the model number for the engine, I have looked all over and found none. I would also like to know if there is a good online vendor for parts.

Re: Project boat

Motor data plate is typically on the side or center of the transom mtg bracket. Some new parts (water pump, etc.) are available from dealers and a lot of common parts thru NAPA dealers, as well as many other sources.

You should consider getting a shop manual (this site?) as well before you attempt anything non-obvious.

Re: Project boat

I plan on getting this thing tuned up if I can find someone to work on it. If not I will get a manual and do it myself.

I am concerned about the controls for forward/reverse.
It would seem that the controls don't travel far enough in either direction to engage.
I'm starting to wonder if the control ever worked it or if this is a diff eng from original.

Thank you bear.

That year motor matches the boat so it may be the orig. motor.

Do you have any ideas on the control problem?

Thanks again.

Beach,Unhook the controls and see if the lever will shift it.If the motor is not running it is necessary to crank the motor a little as you shift for it to work.
There is a low speed mixture screw you can adjust
to improve the idle.Simply turn as it idles. There is also an idle speed adj. screw.

Re: Project boat

The lever does engage the prop forward and reverse, the amout of travel seems to be 3/4" to 1" more than the controls allow. Is this weird or what?

Engine cooling - What is the proper way to connect to a water hose to test run or should this only be done in a barrel?

Re: Project boat

I just made an adjustment to the low speed. Seated then 1.5 turns out. The thing was out about 8 turns so I hope the is an improvement.
What is the best manual you can recommend and when can I get it at. I have alot of experience with auto repair if that helps as far as the manuals go.

Re: Project boat

There is a peice that is broken by the lever. It looks like it may keep you from shifting at higher speeds? I there and adjustment as far as lever travel to engage.

Re: Project boat

Hello.
Congratulations on your birthday and the great gift.
You should try to get a manual that explains about pressure tanks and many other things that are not obviously part of this engine. The Seloc for outboards from '56 till '72 for engines up to 40 hp has all of that.
The first thing you should realize is that with these old machines you will find it quite hard to find mecanics (younger ones)who are trained for these engines or know where to get spare parts.
Do not let this discourage you. These engines are quite simple, strong and trustworthy. Usually a good cleanup, fresh rubber hoses, plugs and a new impeller is enough to get them back to work.
Here are 2 websites that have spare parts.
www.twincityoutboards.com
www.americanoutboard.com
There are a lot of people on this board who know these engines inside out.If you do your part by buying a manual and by asking the right questions, you should be able to get her flying across the water in no time.
Good luck!!

Re: Project boat

I ordered the seloc book vol 1.

How can I tell from the engine if I need a pressurized tank. I would like to start looking for one if I need it. Right now I am using a plastic 6 gal from walmart. The disconnect on the front of the motor has only a gas port.

Re: Project boat

Hello +
Maybe I misunderstood,so here goes.
If you only have a gasport and no double hose connector than you most likely (99%)have a fuel pump on the engine.
When you look at the gasport, you will see either a two pronged or a three pronged inlet. The three pronged inlet means that you will need a pressure tank.If you cannot find any prongs, then just check on the sides of the engine to see if there is only a fuel bowl in the fuel line,or if there is an actual fuel pump sitting on one side of your engine. There are a lot of '58s where the pressure tank system has been replaced in favor of a pump.
If you decide that you need a pressure tank you may want to check out: "Johnson outboard" on e-bay because these systems can be quite expensive.

Re: Project boat

From your response and further reading I believe this model has a fuel pump.
