or better yet, project money pit haha.

original thread where I ran into the title issue:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=485316

I went through all the steps and $$ (about $135 all told) and got my title in the mail yesterday. SCDNR is the devil! lol! but now I know the full process to get a title for marine equipment in SC. if you dont mind the waiting game, not really that horrible.

I'm going to clean up the garage this afternoon and keep going with the teardown.

this will be my first complete teardown/rebuild on an outboard so I'm really excited. though I've rebuilt about 30 automotive engines so I guess its just so I can fully verse myself in 2-strokes.

I know its 50/50 whether it will work or not but I like those odds. in the end, it'll either run fine, or I'll part it out for more than I have in it.

edit: here's how I got the engine originally:

and here it is before I got started on it while I was waiting on the title.

the obvious damage to the lower portion of the crankcase, ouch!

Re: project franken-rude kicks off!

snag #1.

sigh, already. lol.

got the foot off and then started taking the mid section off.

couldnt get any of the 4 bolts that hold the lower rubber mounts to the mid section from the pivot portion. (no idea what the layman's terms are for them).

continued taking the upper bolts to the mid section off and somebody apparently replaced one with a smaller non-stainless bolt. sigh. its also rounded on the head. cant get ANY sockets to hold onto it. its against the housing. also, my grinder is shot. I'm thinking of picking up another grinder in the morning and then grinding the head off....take the midsection off, and then vice grip the bolt body to get it off...

what say you guys about my plan? I left my cell phone charger at work so I'll post a pic of the issue tomorrow.

edit: here's the bolt in question. though I got it off already after grinding the head off.

Re: project franken-rude kicks off!

ok, got the bolt head cut off with one of my carbide bits (generally use them when I'm porting a cylinder head).

I'm beginning to think a service manual is worth its weight in gold versus just going at this thing willy nilly. apparently there's two bolts holding the middle section in place up under the front under the darn powerhead. I can see 4 or 6 bolts holding the powerhead on but who knows at this point if there's a pin/etc holding the crankshaft in place. no clue.

guess I'll just research tomorrow at work before I end up cracking something.

I think you really need an OEM Factory service manual.

Re: project franken-rude kicks off!

ok, got a chance to work on the engine again last night as the fiance had to work late, yay! here's how it was after I finished up last time.

picture.php

cluttered shop = brilliant mind? eh, maybe not haha.

anyway, I just started tearing into the powerhead to get it down to just the long block so I can remove it and find out the carnage inside.

when I was taking off the carbs, I took the enrichener with them so I dont get the hoses all mixed up later. it had a wire running along the block over to a terminal strip. of course, its terminal is the only one that looks horrible. the little screw is all messed up and I cant tell but does that look like its overheated in the past to you? looks like the plastic backing to the terminal is somewhat melted?
picture.php

got the carbs, starter, etc all taken off and placed safely away in the one clean corner of my garage and started taking what I think are the powerhead mounting bolts out. I'm pretty sure the big bolts I took out of the mid section, along with these 4 bolts and one thats upside down on the back are all of the bolts holding the powerhead to the midsection? The one of these in the back corner is really tight so I'm hoping I can get enough deep creep in there so it doesnt snap off.

thats about as far as I got before the fiance called and said she was getting off work early. only reason I stopped is because she bribed me with free drinks at our local hangout. I'm such a sucker for free drinks lol. Gonna try and get some more work done on saturday as its my last chance before I leave town for a week for work.

I agree. I'm going to be looking around online to see if I can hopefully find one in PDF format. just dont know exactly which one I'll need or if there's one that covers several engines including this one?

in case anyone wants to help in my search, its a 1984 70hp model #E70TLCRD

Re: project franken-rude kicks off!

also, here's what I got that really got me wanting to do this.

picture.php
[/img]

its a longblock assembly from a 65hp which is a few years newer than mine. member on here pm'd me when I was trying to figure on whether to rebuild or not. this one has a good lower block cover, and one bad piston with a scored cylinder. its got a good crank, two good pistons/rods and good bearings. I know that I at least have a bad lower block cover, bad crank, and bad rod. hopefully, the upper block and the other two rods/pistons are good so that I can make one good setup out of the two.

I honestly cant remember exactly what year/model this donor longblock is but when I was researching, it did share the same crankshaft # wise as well as piston and rod assembly. I'm assuming the differences must be in the electronics and the carb setup?

it was funny when the crank and the rods crossed over to like 8 years worth of engines with varying hp levels but whatever. donor was very gracious to donate this longblock to me for pretty much the cost of shipping which is how I'm going to be able to keep the main cost of this project low (hopefully) as now I wont have to source a crankshaft or rods or lower block cover, just gaskets, etc.

Re: project franken-rude kicks off!

Better check the splines in bottom of donor crank as this is close to year they had a fine spline driveshaft. Also check the powerhead mounting bolts as they also changed sizes from a 5/16 to a 3/8...

Re: project franken-rude kicks off!

I will check that on the mounting bolts once I get that far into the teardown, thanks!

as far as crank spline, if the changed it, wouldnt that give the crank a different part #? the part number for both the longblocks I have breaks the same.

You should change your screen name to "Glutton For Punishment" LOL

Most people would have left that thing out in the woods, haha. Should be a fun project though, and hopefully you can get it running again. Since you're handy it will save you a ton of cash. Even used outboards cost big money, and so do repairs at boat shops.

Re: project franken-rude kicks off!

yeah, I'll know whether to push forward or abandon hope once I get the crankcase cracked open. if its all corroded inside, its done. the other longblock I have would need too much work for worth to get the bad bore fixed. at that point, I'll probably just part it out on ebay or something.

but I always hold out hope!

I remember pulling an 302 out of the mud at a junkyard about 10 years ago that they gave me for free in return for equal scrap weight.

it had been getting rained on for years, etc. got it home and popped the heads, cylinders were just fine. turned it upside down and popped the pan, just fine, popped a couple mains/rods loose and the bearings were even fine.

tossed it on my engine jig and hooked it up with some other stuff and it ran just fine lol. I beat on it for two years with a 100 shot of nitrous before it finally gave up the ghost. best free engine I ever got.

Re: project franken-rude kicks off!

ok, I'm stuck getting the powerhead off the base. I looked at my donor engine and only see the 6 side bolts and the one rear stud. all of those are removed and I've been beating on it a bit and cant get it to budge. I'm looking all around it and dont see anything else holding it down. any ideas?

Re: project franken-rude kicks off!

ok, found a copy of the 73-89 evinrude service manual which I'm still flipping through...regardless of that...went back outside and after just staring at it for a minute, realized the elegant reason I cant get the powerhead off.

the bolt I had to grind the head off earlier is still in the powerhead and about 4" of its body is inside the middle portion. that and its corroded so yeah, not fun. gotta get the middle section off so I can grip the bolt and remove it from the powerhead and the "mating section" (as I call it right now) which is between the powerhead and the middle section.

so I had to take the lower rubber mounts off the middle section in order to let it drop straight down. I was dreading this as the bolts were REALLY hard. I got the starboard side one off after using a piece of pipe on the socket wrench but man were those bolts hard.

port side, I'm turning and turning and...SNAP. $*%&$*$!!!! head ripped off. I dont even care at this point about the top one as I have to cut it off anyway. 3 metal sawzall blades and two carbide cutoff wheels later and I get it off. took about an hour but its off. I'll just hit the other bolt later with the impact to pop the head off real quick and then beat it off the portion its attached to.
picture.php

picture.php

so after this, I realized I could start yanking on the middle section to get it off so I could get at that bolt but NOOOO. I mean seriously? who puts bolts in places like this where they KNOW the engine will be exposed to salt water and have problems with corrosion years down the road? oh yeah, no care, buy new engine fool! lol. well, at least thats what I'd say if I were a boat engine manufacturer wanting to sell more motors

but yeah, this next pic shows two bolts that I have no idea how I'm going to get at. it shows where they are. the engine pan and the powerhead itself are in the way. only way is where I'm at. tilt/trim barely works and I'll try to lift the engine up so I can get at them easier but not too confident on that as it has stopped going down....had to release the manual down screws to lower it. I "think" it will still go up but yeah...if not I have no clue how to get at them as these two bolts are holding the middle section to the mating section.

In the pic you can see the red circle I put on showing the mating surface and then above it, if you look good behind the screwdriver I have in the pic, you can see the bolt. thats the port side bolt. starboard side bolt is out of view as its still covered in gunk and hidden by the structure.

so much fun!

damn, I think the manual I found is for 73-83 2hp-55hp engines...lol. everything is 1 or 2 cylinders in the powerhead exploded views..

Lol I've already used up all my pentrating lube and I have a torch but dont havw the "feel" for it. Melted some stuff already sigh. I have a propane torch but its not so good on thick parts. You have no idea how I wish I were better with heat. im a genius with a drill bit and helicoils though! :)

Re: project franken-rude kicks off!

Still having problem with the one bolt on port side holding the power head?
Drill it off!
1/2" drill straight through it about 1/2" down from the split between power head and exhaust collector.
