Well I did more sanding on the boat this morning, just a couple spots of glazing putty. I had to put a bit on one spot. After lunch I'm going to sand it down and she is ready for primer....sort of. I still need to sand down the bottom of the upper deck. It has a texture made into it......this will be fun! Hopefully that won't take too long. I also need to block out the dog house again. I might wait till tomorrow night for that. Wouldn't hurt to give it a little more time to cure.

I have been contemplating building a paint booth. I don't know, might still paint it outside.....but finding a non windy day in OK is just about impossible. This is the best time of the year though. I have an idea for a break down paint booth.....might have to pick up some steel tube this week.

What happened to the paint booth you made for Miss Morgan? I thought it was built so you could break it down and store it for the next build.

Well it would be a little small if I still had it. The tornado got it, guess they like paint booths, lol. It was a pain to break down. I ended up using the lumber from the sides for blocking in the new barns and the two end sections.....well lets just say they are gone lol. I want this one to be modular length wise,8', 16', 24', 32' long, and a quick set up. I think it will be 14' wide. Also I want it to break down and store in a small area, maybe hanging from the rafters in the back of the barn,

Sorry bout that, I didn't know about the twister. I guess I'm still a relative newbie here on iBoats, so that's not too surprising I didn't know something like that.

After spending way too many years stationed on the gulf coast and the Caribbean I didn't want to have to deal with Hurricanes and tornadoes anymore. That's one big factor why I moved up here to the mountains.

Well I guess now you have the chance to build something bigger and better then. Sounds like you've already got it figured out.

It was an EF5, we like to do things right! lol! Interesting experience....not exactly fun but you learn a lot. Its an amazing place to live, everyone put on their boots the next day and started rebuilding. The outpouring of help was incredible....you learn a lot about where you live when things like that happen.

I was looking at DYI paint booths tonight, mostly PVC pipe....they work, but not very well on a large scale. I want one that I can do several fairly large projects like Fuggly in. And it would be nice to be able to scale it down. I ran across this...now that is cool!

I like the concept behind that one retractable one. Seems like you'd probably end up wanting to paint a lot more stuff just as an excuse to use it.

I can see how it would be great for sanding also......Id love to build one like that! But I need to get this one done, so the simpler the better.

Arch, the retractable booth looks really nice, but they still used it in an enclosed area. I wonder how that would actually work outside where the wind could effect it? There is a lot of surface area to catch wind and that would be the main concern. :noidea:

Ha Arch, being how you talk about near constant wind, you should be building a wind turbine generator. Could be a profitable project in your area.

Oh there are thousands of them, kind of muck up the landscape if you ask me. There are a lot of law suits over them. I looked into one for the house, but it would take 20 years or so to pay back. When your sitting on a pile of natural gas, electricity is pretty cheap!

So here is the paint booth blower motor.......



1/3 hp, so I am guessing 2800 cfm? Just a guess looking at some other fans. Its from the lake oddly enough, off of the old split system. The motor is almost new, squirrel cage was built in 1968. Anyhow the paint booth is starting to take shape. I need to do some drawing, right now I think I have most of the basic components in my head. The biggest issue in my head right now is sorting out the static pressure in the booth. I want a positive pressure, that way trash is pushed in not out. To speed things up I am also going to set it up in a different spot in the shop that where I will leave it later. the main reason is I haven't installed some of the lights yet. So moving it solves the light issue. But makes the exhaust duct longer. Since it is the big question a this point (in terms of static pressure) I don't see that as a big deal. I can fuss with it and get the final duct size right, then just oversize it temp for this time......I can never do things the easy way...... :facepalm:

You can use a regular squirrel cage type fan ? Your gunna push air in through a filter then out to clean the air ... So no need for any type explosion proof fan ...

The fan is a pusher. It will blow into a plenum box with filters between it and the booth. The static pressure should always be lower on the booth side of the filter box, so there shouldn't be anything backing up to the motor. And to answer your question, yes it should be explosion proof. But if you ever saw the negative pressure paint booth I used to work in in high school, you would have no worries! Anyhow I will run some test and make sure I am happy with the way it is working, And if I blow up, its my fault! But I don't think that is going to happen. My last one used box fans from Walmart, worked fairly well for the most part.

Can't say for certain, but that fan doesn't have any brushes anyways so what is there to worry about with explosions? :noidea:

Back years ago, okay decades ago, when I was still repairing black boxes for aircraft, we used a huge paint room. And they used water as their filtering system. Huge fans pulled everything through a water bath and out the exhaust stacks. The water bath was about four foot wide and at least 20 feet long and two to three foot deep. And when you turned it on, the system sounded like a huge engine cranking up. But no fumes could be smelt outside that paint booth.

I actually have a three speed 220 volt AC fan like that (had a new AC system installed back a coule years ago). I kept the fan because I had plans for it. I bought a heavy current four position switch so I can make a blower system for my shop. But it is one of those projects that are on the LIST
