Prop appears to have too much "play"

I have a 1995 Four Winns 258 Vista with a 5.8 liter King Cobra and OMC outdrive. The boat was purchased with an aluminum prop on the drive. I have beat up the prop and it needs to be changed. Upon purchase, the owner gave me a stainless steel prop in the box that he said was the original prop. I pulled the present prop and replaced with the original (never used) prop. But, now when you physically pull on the prop while on the trailer the prop has about 3/4 to an inch of "play." It appears that the nut does not "sit" down on the prop correctly. Is this too much play or am I looking at doing some damage to the shaft or other parts? I do not know the size and pitch of the two props, but can post that info this evening. In addition, does anyone know what the WOT for this boat is suppossed to be? Thanks, in advance, for all of the help that I may receive.

Did you put back the thrust washer behind the prop? That would be the washer to the left in this picture:
Stevens - thanks!!!! Not only did I not put the washer on, I never saw the nut at the top of the picture. All I replaced was the nut that allowed the pin to pass through. These were the only parts that were removed. I'll go look and see if it is there. If not there, can I buy these parts at a local store, say West Marine?

Yes, it is an OMC. Does anyone know what the RPM range is at WOT for this engine package? I'm not getting the MPH claimed by the manufacture. The last time I opened up the throttle the RPM gauge was wanting to push 6000 RPM. I backed off as I assumed this was way too much.

Yes, the parts pictured above are Mercury parts, I couldn't find a similar picture for OMC.

However, this may be it:

8521_reg.jpg

(As described by MercuryPartsExpress: "Fits all Johnson/Evinrude Loop V-4 120-140 HP 1985, Loop V-4 140 HP Longshaft 1989-1994, Loop V-4 130 HP 1995 and newer, and V-6 & V-8 150-300 HP 1976 and newer. Also fits Stinger 800 1978-1986, OMC Cobra V Series 1986-1987 and Cobra/King Cobra 1992-1993.")

If this is still not it, your local boating store should have the exactly right hub kit and hardware for your prop & outdrive.

Anyway, if you didn't remove the washer, it is probably stuck to the old prop and came off with it.

Now, if you are not getting the expected speed AND the engine seems to overrev, the pitch of the current prop is probably too low.

Once you get some specific figures for actual and expected speed, and current WOT RPM, I am sure some of the good folks here can help you out with a suggested correct pitch.
