Background: 2002 Glastron SX 175 with 3.0 Volvo I/O and a 19 pitch alum prop from factory. Runs within specs but it is slow out of the hole when pulling up my son. He is 15 and 6'3' 180 pds and still growing. I am thinking of going to a 17 alum or a 19 SS. Any suggestions?

Re: Prop Comparison

Mre clarification. O am looking at the Hustler H1417 Aluminum 17 pitch as a relacement. Any opinionsabout that being able to deliver that last bit of hole power to get my skiers up?

Re: Prop Comparison

I like my hustler prop over my OEM prop but this is on a 55hp johnson. Holds turns well and better hole shot. I feel the huster seems to be about 1" higher pitch then my oem prop of the same pitch rating. I started with a 17 pitch to replace my oem 17pitch and it drug my rpms down 200rpm, swaped on a 15 pitch hustler and my rpms came up 250rpm over the oem 17 pitch AND I gained 2mph topend with a better holeshot to boot.

Going from a 19P aluminum, you'd be better off going with a 17 in SS, "IF" you choose an SS.
Venting your 19P that you have now can increase hole-shot quite a bit.

Re: Prop Comparison

I think you'll give up quite a bit of top end speed and 'runaround' fuel economy with a 17" prop. Good for pulling, but you'll be stuck in 2nd gear.

I'd look at an ventliated (adjustable) 19" prop.
(Like the Quicksilver Vensura & etc).

Re: Prop Comparison

Have you considered a 4-blade composite prop? Cost is a bit more than aluminum, usually, but far less than SS. See my post on comp props 7/15 (today). I'm very happy with mine.

Re: Prop Comparison

We're missing the point here, guys...the 19 is not performing well..if we vent it we'll get some hole-shot back.
The reason I recommend a 17 in a high-quality SS is because SS will usually drop the RPM at top-end due to being more efficient..so in this case, we may not gain as much RPM as one might think, and with the lift capabilities, it could be faster. A 19 in SS will pull like a 20 in aluminum. choosing the correct SS prop is Key.
As for the comprop, if you hit the slightest twig it will shear a blade, so I recommend against them for every-day use. They have their place but not as a main prop unless you want to settle for just "OK" performance.
BTW, the comprop is 84.95....much cheaper than replacement aluminum, until you have to start replacing props every-other weekend.

Re: Prop Comparison

I've been down this path with a older 3.0l merc and a 21 pitch michigan wheel aluminum prop. The gear ratio i had was 2/1 and i could reach 4800 rpm but it was a pig out of the hole. It could reach 42 mph (non gps) and was a gas @ wot with up to 4 people.

I knew i was proped wrong for how i wanted to use the boat so after a little reasearch i Installed smart tab's. They did make a real difference in how the boat got on plane (Very real) from there i bolted up a stilleto 20 pitch bay pro 11 (4 blade)

Using the combination of those two the boat acted quite a bit differnt, kinda like a race machine very responsive. I was really impressed, Unfortunaltey i blew my gears due to the stupidty of not checking my gear lube, but before that happend i got some good reading's .

My top speed was 39 mph rev's really dropped to 4500 rpm (it can go to 5100 with a 19 pitch aluminum) I'd suggest you post your wot and your rpm figure and gear ratio when your there and see if your within spec (that motor should be a 3.0lx more power than mine) aka 4800 rpm or high.

There were 2 big changes as to the prop, one the midrage and hole shot made it feel like a real power boat, two i noticed a small rooster tail about 20' in back of the boat that had not been there before along with a much smaller wake (tab induced) I'am going to finsih the cosmetic part of the restore before i go out agian but when i do ill be propping a 19 or 18 stilletto 4 blade (avaibliity) and having a blast getting all the economy a 3.0 enjoys and the feel of a hotrod, My comparsion's come from runnnig a 220 hp volvo on a 18' wellcraft and from 0-40 there's not much if any diff after those mod's

Ohh forgot one thing............ http://www.iboats.com/bbboard/bbBoa...=430570354&list_time=1149764174&view_id=39250

Thank Steven's for that, that is if you go to 4 blade stiletto lol there huge........ ^@%@%%%$ opps you have a volvo.........
