Prop Help & Suggestions

Hey all,<br /><br />I am also replacing the prop on my 1979 Mercury 40HP engine. The prop that was on it was a 10-3/8 x 13 (Pitch).<br /><br />Does anyone have a suggestion what type/brand/place to buy a new prop? I know there are several types, Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Composit. Several brands, all say they are the best.<br /><br />Are the Vortex aluminum prop's with the break away hubs good?<br /><br /><br />On another note: I am installing new floors in my 1978 Rinkerbuilt tri-hull, and need to put in new floation foam. I have found a couple of places to buy the liquid floation foam its about $55 for 8 cubic feet.<br /><br />I have no idea how much i actually need. So my questions is If i put too much, what will happen? Will it just expand to all available space, then stop? or will it push up the floor and out any available crack/hole?<br /><br /><br />Thanks for the help.<br /><br />-TheChad

Try getting your old prop fixed-it's cheaper and will be like new.<br /><br /><br />Couldn't tell you about the foam.

I have no idea how much i actually need. So my questions is If i put too much, what will happen? Will it just expand to all available space, then stop? or will it push up the floor and out any available crack/hole?<br /><br />Reply;<br />If you do not provide sufficient relief holes for the surplus foam to expand out of, it will litterally blow apart whatever is keeping it confined.

WHen you pour the foam be sure to leave sufficient relief holes. Pour in smaller batches until you get a feel for how much to use.<br /><br />As for the prop there are a couple things to watch for. Diameter (10 3/8"), pitch (13"), # splines on shaft (probably 13) and hub size (probably 3 1/8"). You need to choose a prop with the same hub diameter and spline count. The diameter and pitch combinations for your motor will be limited to certain combinations. Example 10 1/8 x 15" or 10 1/4 x 14" or 10 3/8 x 13". When choosing a prop, you want to select one that will permit your motor to run at the recommended max RPM with a typical load in the boat.

So are you saying i can use other diameter's like 10-1/8", 10-1/4"?<br /><br />I know the Prop that came off, is 10-3/8" x 13" (Pitch), and 13 splines.<br /><br />Thanks for the help,<br /><br />-TheChad
